You can disagree (and I said that most of you would- since you're bass players) but my girlfriend's sister is a big fan of RHCP (or so she says).

Across the walls of her room are posters of Anthony Kiedis.

I asked her once: "What do you think about Flea?"
She said "Who?"
"The bass player"
"Oh, well he isn't very good looking- but I guess he plays okay."

Everyone looks at the singer- You can be the most outragous bass player/performer in the world but the average Joe/Jane connects with the vocal parts the most- if you singer sucks and has no stage presence your band won't go far.

I wouldn't say your girlfriend's sister was representative of the whole RHCP fan base... For every person you can find who only cares about singer in that band, I can find 3 who care more about the musicians. It sounds to me like your gf's sister cares more about the best looking members of a band, not the vocal parts at all. I'm sure if Flea was the best looking, she was have his pics all over the wall.

i mean you guys can have your opinions but bringing up one band or instance that the singer is less important than the band does not prove your point. theyre saying as a whole rock music, and most other kinds of music, are lyrically driven. If you havent figured this out then your band probably hasnt become very popular. The singer always gets the most girls the most popularity the most whatever. If you honestly thought playing bass was gonna get you girls you were wrong. Im not saying that it doesnt but ive played around a long time, worked in studios, worked for record labels, and the bassist is the least recognized person right behind the guy who plays cowbell. most bassists know this and like this. I know i do. Ive played guitar for a long time and can still play quite well, but like being able to just hold down a line and going off on tangents whenever i want. If you wanted fame and whatever else then play lead guitar or sing. Second, reason i was in a real similiar situation like this about a year ago. We got a girl singer that had amazing pipes. She is a classically trained singer. She had no stage presence and did nothing for the band. I ended up quitting to play in a little harder band but yea it was frustrating. The only thing i can say is make her your puppet. Shes not the experienced one, you are. Shes a block of clay you can mold into whatever u want, and if she resists fire her. If the band is solid musically thats the most important thing, find a new singer.

3. Honestly she puts the least effort out of all of us, but we can't really blame her, cause she works late and has martial arts yoga thing that she does.

How is prioritizing that yoga thing she does above the band not her fault? Is music the most important thing in your life? If no, none of this **** matters. Live your stupid dramas and be mediocre. If yes, get in a band with other people who feel the same way, and you will be amazed at what happens.

LSD (Lead Singers Disease) is the reason we got rid of ours. We would be loading in/out and he would basically grab his mic and say "I'm done" and leave. I knew he wouldn't last long when we were playing a big festival and he told me "I don't really like watching other bands."

Out lead guitarist is now the singer and most people agree we're better than ever...

Again this seems kinda fuzzy to me (you weren't even clear about what time you were going to be going on at). You guys should probably make sure that it never happens again. Who ever sets up the gig needs to be very clear about what time you perform and what time every one needs to be there.

I think it was clear. And often, if you aren't the first band or you didn't set up the gig, NO ONE can tell you what time you'll be on. If the show starts at 10pm and you're the 3rd band, if you're lucky you get on at 11, but it could be almost 12 before you do if sets run long or the other bands start late. The drummer was just being honest when asked when they went on. He didn't know, but he knew the time range and that she needed to be there before the earliest possible time the band would go on.

Anyway, my bandmates and I all get our gear from our rehearsal space at the same time and go to the shows together so it makes it easy. We all know where we're going and when we're gonna get there. And we always get there in time for the first band, no matter when we're on and try to stay until everyone is done or at least halfway through the last band if it's a 4 band bill, b/c you should support your local music scene.

I think it's lame when singer's who don't play an instrament don't help w/ the gear. After I'm done with my bass rig, I help our drummer b/c he's got the most stuff. It's a team effort and everyone should help each other out so you can get on/off the stage quicker and unload and get home at a decent hour.
