I had 2 carvin pb and hated them. I got the 2 pickups though. Very noisy, bad volume drop when blended. When just using the p pickup the tone was meh, not organic at all. Very active sounding with boosted lows and highs, not as natural as a normal p or the g&l I ended up with. Ed friedland clearly prefers the fenders or g&l. You gotta read between the lines with him but check out the video of the p bass mashup. The g&l lb-100 is fully custom too and around the same price. 1000 if you wanna set up beyond mim or vintage modified

Craving a P Bass.... Choices, Choices.....

I just put a new Fender USA Nitro Satin P-bass on layaway.. it was on sale for $200 less than it's listed price. It was listed as an American Deluxe on it's tag..but upon looking it up later I found it was a Guitar Center exclusive Fender P-bass. As much we all love to hate on GC.. killer freaking bass... I feel pretty lucky I got it on sale as well. I was originally interested in an arctic white MIM Standard P...but no local stores stock them and I was able to put this beast on layaway which I couldn't do for that white MIM. On another note.. I was just looking at Peavey Fury's on ebay.. great price from a reportedly great bass. I can't vouch for them myself, but I've seen plenty of love for them on these forums.. the P-bass style furies seem to go for pretty cheap as well. If I saw a white one.. I'd have totally snagged one, but all I could see was black and blue.
I felt a need to comment however, as, I too was craving a P-bass. Now I'm craving the ability to play the one I put money down on lol. Can't wait til I have that sucker paid off and can take it home. I still love my sr500 a lot.. but.. I really can't wait to get my hands on this USA made Fender P again.

highway one p - going up in price, cause they are usa fenders, nice bass, kind of heavy, pickups can be a little annoying to dial in, great in mix
lakland skyline p - great in band mix, feeds back a little, very nice huge neck, no resale vale at all outside of talkbass

To the OP, I've also got one of those LPB VM PJ's and its very, very good!, in fact I've noticed it seems to be getting better with age. It's the lightest bass I've ever played. The neck is slim and the PU's are reasonable if a little light weight, still make sure you try a couple, reckon you'll be impressed.
