ok . i have a spector rex 5 bass thats my number one got to bass . what im interested in is can i wire up a 1/8" headphone jack and some type small (very small) pot to the preamp and have a in ear signal direct from my bass ??????


soemone with some more sense help me out on this ....

The onboard preamp may not be powerful enough to give you a decent signal. I know that when I plug my headphones directly into my Ibanez SR505, I have to crank the EQ to max boost to get a signal loud enough for solo bedroom playing.

• Why would you use a 1/8" jack instead of a 1/4" jack? The 1/4" would plug right into your bass.
• Wouldn't a headphone amp practice tool serve the purpose you are trying to accomplish for @ $40 - 50

Or is there more to what you are asking than is readily apparent? If you're talking about hearing yourself through headphones while you are playing through a speaker or PA, you could plug a headphone amp like the one pictured above into your bass. Then plug a 2 to 1 splitter into the output jack of the headphone amp.

Plug your headphones into one side of the adaptor, a 1/8" cable into the other side and use a 1/4" adaptor on the amp end of the 1/8" cable.

I just tried the same seems that my warwick preamp wouldn't drive my mp3 players phones
kind of surprised by that i always thought warwicks had a high out put pre

i want to use this seperate from my 1/4" jack . i want to use this new jack for a in ear monitor of sorts , on stage live use .... not in the bed room .

But your only going to monitor yourself, and if there sound isolating, which most are. You wont hear anything but bass

the regular senheiser ear buds arent total isolating and i always only use one in the ear closest to my stage rig .

some of you arent reading where im gonna use the headphones on stage while im plugged into my stage rig . im runnin a 100 watt tube bass rig and i want a in ear just to make sure i can hear my bass well enough on stage .

this is why im talking about adding a 1/8" jack onto the contol cover of my bass . then i need something to power the headphones . so im doin some lookin around for a small headphone pack .

i initially just hoped the preamp would run them , but it wont .

Yep, it's a crazy idea! Sounds like you need a dual output headphone amp to send a signal to your amp head as well as your headphones. Don't think I've seen such a thing...

The CMOY amp would work well for you. I picked one up from an ebay seller about a month ago and I use that for a practice amp. You'll get plenty of volume and if you only want output in one ear you won't have to muck about finding a mono-stereo adapter. Then again you could just wire the jack in the bass to give a 2 channel mono signal.

Since the required parts are relatively small, you may even be able to mount the circuit inside the bass That would be pretty slick, IMO.

pspookie , thats the front runner for the project . but after my brain fart i realized my boss me50b unit has a headphone out . so i will prolly fab up a special cable with a 1/8" jack and a 1/4" jack so i can simply plug and play .

Ok, that may be, but do your IEMs have 1/8" plugs? I think what you mean to be saying is 3.5mm, seeing as the standard sizes for TRS jacks/plugs are either 1/4" or 3.5mm.

I've always heard them referred to as 1/8" jacks too....for some reason. I knew what you meant.

I think its been covered already...but i like your idea.

Heaphones need their own preamp. You wouldnt want to add interference of any kind to your bass signal...so best to not muck about trying to make your onboard pre drive both. Get a little headphone amp like stated...and maybe duct tape it to your strap like we used to do with wireless units back in the day.

Now there are two options at this point. Take a post preamp signal to feed your headphones amp...or tap into the wiring to grab a line level signal. Personally...i think id choose the latter...this way you wont muck up the headphone amp or phones. And you could get cleaner signal control to you headphones....without altering your bass tones heard through the stage...
