Crazy quest, the worst resonant wood

Interesting suggestions so far. I still am really thinking a hard wood, so cork and balsa would be too wimpy. Imagine if you were making a double neck body and wanted to prevent any of the other side sounds from crossing over. I'm thinking an inch or 2 thickness lam in the middle.

Oh, I thought you were going to make a tonewood debate killer/vindicator. For that application, maybe make a deep channel between the high and low body sides, fill it in with soft urethane casting compound, as a vibration snubber. Cap the whole body with a top or veneer.
 
A friend busted a table from Ikea.... how about that honey comb cardboard. Or better yet, the thick carboard they use in cat scratching pads.

I dig your idea, but wouldn't a cap still transfer energy? Although without a top that does open up the idea of a fold-able instrument. :)

Mykk, wow that poor table, LOL. I really do want the instrument to hold together still, I just want all vibration to just stop when it hits this mystery layer.

If you routed out a channel between the two sides, and filled it with urethane so that it contacted all of the body as well as the body cap, I think it would reduce crosstalk between both sides to a point that it would be negligible (i wasn't aware it was a problem in the first place, interesting.) Excuse the super-crude Rhino, but here's what I'm trying to convey:

I've been designing for a while on a doubleneck bass where the bodies are bolted together and can be disconnected from each other to use as seperate instruments.. This bolt together approach with a slab of rubber in between would kill almost any sound transfer.

I dig the Rhino drawing, just learning to use that myself. Still trying to do it with wood though.

Hmmm Sycamore, should be plenty of that around here. It's Janka is 770, certainly getting on the low end of that scale.

MDF is pretty dense I would think, but you are right about it being used in cabinets, then again so is Baltic birch.

Not really seeing the point in isolating the two sides of a double neck. You're gonna get some sympathetic vibrations from your amps anyway. Is this gonna be bass/guitar or bass/bass? My DN bass/guitar just has a 3-way switch and two jacks, so I can mute either neck (one side of the switch or the other) or have both on (switch in the middle). Part of the fun of a DN is the sympathies vibrations, especially if you tune one neck to an open tuning and play in that key.
 
If you'd really like to isolate the two units, my suggestion would be to have no wood-wood contact, no fasteners spanning the halves, and minimal contact between them.

One way to accomplish this would be to build the two halves, and then on what would normally be the two joint faces, bore a pair of 1" holes into each face. Then buy some hard urethane 1" diameter rod and glue it as two dowels to connect them, with the two bodies not quite touching.

The urethane can be bought in various hardnesses/flexibilities, specified by durometer number, so you can try a few before committing with glue. This way you can find a material that is firm enough for structural purposes, but as flexible as you can get away with, for isolation purposes.

Yeah Pilot I've thought of using damper bushings and such. Even looked into Sorbothane as an option.

It's got to be wood, or a suitable dead non wood material.
