Interesting suggestions so far. I still am really thinking a hard wood, so cork and balsa would be too wimpy. Imagine if you were making a double neck body and wanted to prevent any of the other side sounds from crossing over. I'm thinking an inch or 2 thickness lam in the middle.

Beauchene Implements that's interesting, while I'd love to play the tonewood debate killer/vindicator, I've been planning this experimental thing for a while, just now getting around to putting my brain to work. I dig your idea, but wouldn't a cap still transfer energy? Although without a top that does open up the idea of a fold-able instrument.
