Crazy8 and Crazy88

Guys---I just received the prototype of the Eminence Defend unit. This is likely to be a BIG game changer. It is essentially a small board thet mounts inside the cab and is a DSP that runs on the speaker voltage. It is a programmable HPF and limiter. It is supposedly super transparent. If it does what others that I trust have told me it can provide the HPF and just chop off peaks in a way that is unnoticeable (unless you use too much limiting) It literally should make a Crazy 8 compete with 12's---I'm afraid what it will do for the 88! I'll keep y'all (as they would say at Eminence in Kentucky) posted. And it's not supposed to be pricey at all.

So I find out about the Crazy88 two days ago, this morning it gets a 3db bottom boost and tonight it's going to do magic. I think I'll go to bed now because by the time I wake up - cold fusion. Heh. Any chance of a YouTube vid?

Thanks!

+1 My head is spinning, too! I think this is Mike's way of telling me not to order my 88 until all of the tweaks and upgrades are in the mix. ;)

The technology is a way off. Eminence has been teasing with this for 2 years. But they finally got some out to the builders.I fortunately have the ability to sound more important than I am! They say the summer but I doubt that given their past experience. But it will see the light of day. Eventually.

On the 88's the only new update is the new port. Should make an appreciable difference.

Its such a radical technology, that I appreciate all the R+D. You really want to make sure it is working right. Should be excellent on smaller speakers so that you can drive them to their limit simply without worrying about blowing them. I'm thinking of it as similar to the way my Droid phone can sound actually really decent without distorting considering how tiny the driver must be in it.

Great job on the collab with gb on this. The Crazy8 is really a fantastically small cabinet with a big sound.\

Anyone try a Crazy 8 or 88 as a PA yet? I'm really curious how it does because matched with a 22 lbs composite 12sub it would make a really great portable system. My only fear is the looks on peoples faces when I walk in with 60 lbs of speakers to be the PA for 200 people!

Reality check: The Faital has 160cc of displacement. The Defender won't change that. Its maximum output will remain the same.
The Faital does have great output for an eight, but it's still an eight. If I had to go with a tiny cab it's probably what I'd use, but it won't compete with a comparable ten in a larger box. Like the Faital 10HP1020, for instance. Or the about to be released 3010. And the 3012HO has the same displacement as two 8PR200s, but costs the same as one, so I wouldn't be scurrying to do 2x8s rather than 1x12s either.
This doesn't negate in the least the utility of the Crazy 8 if you need the best result possible from a box of its size. But keep in mind always that unless you're Chuck Norris you can't break Hoffman's Iron Law.

How much is a Crazy88? Where can I find pricing info?

Invalid Link Removed is my Greenboy builder of choice, as he is with in an hour drive of me, I believe that any builder listed on [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] site can build you one. Their prices vary depending on the materials they use.

Right after he slammed that revolving door. :D

Agreed that it cant beat a 12 but would probably beat a number of lesser 10's. Another problem with such a small speaker is sensitivity. At 94 dB/w it is 6 to 7 dB short of the 3012HO so would need more than 4 times the power to equal its broadband output. It is also 3 to 4 dB short of an equivalent pro 10 with more volume displacement.

The box size is pretty large for this driver too but probably necessary to make the most of the displacement using reflex technology. This could be shrunk using hybrid technology without losing output and also smoothing the bass further.

Bear in mind you can make a box with a single 10 a similar size in which would be 300W, 98 dB/W and only 2 lbs heavier than the Crazy 8 / lighter than crazy 88.

Watch this space....(well amps section anyway!)

To be fair, I think Mike was referring to more of a typical oem 1x12 cab, not one using a premium woofer like a 3012HO. For instance, how many commercial cabs have been built using the Delta 12B which has less displacement than a single 8pr200?

Comparing custom built cabs to 99% of the commercially built stuff is silly, because the commercial stuff doesn't provide the required data to make a valid comparison. One should be comparing custom built to custom built, where you can actually know how much displacement and sensitivity you're getting per dollar spent.

aww come on Bill, most bass cabs aren't that complicated. You could open up those 99% and tell me exactly what the drivers are and what kind of displacement each one brings.

Heck if I can, I'm sure you can.

Anyways, no need to nit pick, not all 12"s are the same so comparing anything to a 12 is only as good as one's idea of what a 12 can do.

Although you could pull the commercial ones apart and make your own calculations to show the performance limitations of commercial designs (and there are usually major compromises), the main argument is that we should be comparing different types of custom cab or good commercial cabs which use similar premium drivers offering the very best performance. For instance, BFM and Barefaced have used Kappalites before. Why not use their designs as a benchmark and then see how it can be bettered (or tweaked).

Hoffmans Iron law is a theoretical limitation and most cabs don't even get close, not making the most of the drivers. If (for example) an existing good design is 90% there then there is still 10% more than can be extracted, or it gives room for adjustments to cone control or tonality.

I am excited by the Crazy 8 - sounds a good concept but I cant see the advantage over an equivalent premium 10 which is about the same size. Ask yourself what matters more - an extra 1 lb or better performance. As bassists, we should all agree on this one (within reason).

Finally, I dont see why adding a tweeter should add so much weight. To be honest with a bass mid at only 94 dB/W, there are many suitable lightweight and neo tweeters available which are smaller and much lighter and would still provide more than enough output. looks overkill to me.

I could. Maybe you could, but only if it's not an OEM. How many buyers could, and even if they could how could they before they buy it? The time to know what you're getting for your money is before you lay that cash down.
