Crazy8 and Crazy88

I appreciate the guru discussion. I agree that the crazy’s should be compared to other customs but also to what I have. Here are some things I’ve looked at:

Why is a BFM Jack12 ten pounds heavier than a fEarful 12/6? The mid in the fEarful weighs more than a full piezo array, I'm sure.

From the BFM site:
But at 18 x 18 x 22 inches and forty pounds the J112 remains a compact lightweight powerhouse

This may not be with the 3012. The data on that chart is what I've come up with without bothering each designer for specs. I welcome corrections and more input. There are composite versions of the TC, BFMs and fearfuls, but as weight goes down cost goes up. And a typical 12/6 out of wood appears to be in the 40lb range.

The Thunderchild 112 costs $800 + shipping, and weighs 31 pounds. Not $1100 and 34 pounds. If you add the acoustic-friendly rear-firing tweeter, we go up to $920 and 32 pounds. The dimensions are correct. Pole-mounting is generally impractical due to the location of the crossover board inside the cabinet, but other than that the cab is quite suitable for PA duty. Ships from Idaho.

My bad. I got the weight off another thread and perhaps I'm confusing the price with the 15?

So the Defend seems to be an open secret. How is this different really from what you can do at the amp? The fact that it's closely paired to the box design?
It's programmed to limit the voltage delivered to the driver. Amps can't do that; they require an outboard limiter. To get the best possible result one needs to know the voltage limit of the driver/cab to not exceed xmax. That's not an option with most commercial cabs.

Isn't this similar to what TC electronic is doing in their rebel head series? Removing peaks etc...

I'm confused. Is this no longer a Crazy8 / Crazy88 thread? :help:

Perhaps I should have started a thread about what bass cabs to use as a PA before I ordered the 88.:D

Actually, the PA is something I go back and forth on. I really don't need/want it, but somehow I always find myself thinking of building one again.

Back on topic, here are some 2x10 numbers:

AE210 40lbs 8ohm ~$700 used (mine is vertical)
HD210 54lbs 8ohm $770 (back to horizontal :rollno:)
NL210 34lbs 8ohm $1,200

And a quote from Mike before he built the 88:

It should compete with the best 2x 10's and sound much better. Street price on an EA NL210 is $1000. This should be lighter smaller and better sounding

This was what really got my attention. If it doesn't work out I'll try something else. Won't be the first time.:) Some small cab solutions I've tried:

Ibanez p5110
EA micro/wizzy 10 (really liked, but just not quite enough)
LDS 12/6
Ampeg SVT210AV

Thanks for fixing it in your list! No "bad" on your part; the original weight of the TC112 was in fact 34 pounds, I'd forgotten about that. Then I switched to Italian Poplar, and dropped three pounds.

My 115s are $1000 in "regular", and $1120 in "acoustic friendly", and it's feasible to install a tophat for pole mounting. Size and weight of my "compact" 115 are not too far off from some of the larger 112s.

Acme makes a high-end fullrange 112 that could probably do PA duty. It trades off some efficiency relative to the others in exchange for very deep low-end extension.

No. That's just compression. DFend will limit voltage into the driver to prevent damage. The only other way to do so is with a limiter, and the DFend has driver/cab specific programming options that a limiter does not.

I'd question the fEarful spec. The J12 has a bit more wood in it, but only perhaps 2 pounds, not 12. And it doesn't have a five pound mid driver. Based on size and driver complement the fEarful should weigh very close to what the Baer does. BTW, the J12Lite is 20 pounds plus driver.

There's not really a fearful weight spec since the builds vary. I put 30+ because at one point I was considering a composite build and I couldn't remember the weight. Most wood builds I've seen seem to be around 40lbs. I don't think composite saves a huge amount here because the driver's and crossover are such heavy contributors to the weight.

I modified the list to reflect the j12lite. I went to your site but didn't see measurements except for the regular version. And I'm assuming it also has the array. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't get a built price on the J112 from the builder and then the project fell apart. I'm not going to bother him for a lite price since I won't be buying one anytime soon.

Please keep in mind I made this list for my own decision making so I could compare pros and cons. Some of the info was readily available and some was scraped from various sources and my shaky memory. I don't want to be unfair to anyone so please correct me if I'm wrong.
