Crikey, Steve Irwin dead

I watched a bit on CNN last night. They ran the story like normal, then followed it up with a sort of "who's to blame?" piece. It kinda said that Irwin and the producers might be to blame of the accident...
If Steve could comment, my guess would be he'd say it was totally his fault and that the animal was just doing what a wild animal does. I saw a clip of him saying just that about all the scars he had from bites etc. Then I'm guessing he'd apologise profusely to his wife. I hope she and the kids get through this, it's terribly sad.
The man had an amazingly long string of being right about how close to get, when to dodge or duck. He did it with knowledge... and luck. And he got a lot of great, exciting moments on film! I'm grateful for that. :)

I would call him a conservationist, not an animal rights proponent, per 'se. He had no problem with killing wild hogs on sight due to their impact on the natural environment.
Oh, I see what your saying. Yes, I should have said animal plights.

Thank you

Tis very unfortunate and surprising. However what I find more surprising is the level of coverage it is getting in the US, i mean i know he was popular over there but, CRIKEY!

Struth mate, I thought for sure they was coming the raw prawn with me, ran out into the front yard with no clobber on something something.

Yeah, I was watching "Good morning America" this morning and they even had "What to do in case of a stingray attack" segment.:rollno:

An expert on Stingrays said that even though a Stingrays barbed puncture is poisonous and extremely painful Irwin made the mistake of pulling the Stingrays barb out,he should have kept it in,by pulling it out it caused him to bleed worse and lose more blood quicker.

I heard another stingray expert say it made no difference. A stab wound to the heart is exactly that. And if you think back to your "what to do if you get bitten by a snake" classes, you'll remember that the venom MUST be prevented from reaching the heart. We don't know yet if the ray delivered any venom but if it did, the venom would have killed him before the wound did.

No matter what caused it, Steve was great and will be missed by Australians and by the looks of it, the rest of the world. He did heaps for conservation and Australian tourism among other things.
I hope his wife and kids are coping ok.

Having being struck in the hand by a stingray barb whilst surfing at my local beach, I can say "IT REALLY HURTS". I thought I was going to cark it after having it go 1cm into my hand... I could feel the poison going through my chest and got all panicked. It was that bad I was screaming at people on the beach to cut my arm off!! I couldn't imagine what it would be like through the chest :bawl:

Is his Zoo anywhere near Sydney? I am visiting some friends in Sydney next month and wanted to go but know jack about Australian Geography :S

I really really want to go now to pay some kind of homage to the guy but if it is on the opposite coast I might not be able to.

On east coast, but not very close.

It's not on the opposite coast, but it's not close to Sydney either. It's actually in Queensland, about an hour drive north from Brisbane. That puts it about 1,200km north of Sydney.

Having said that, a plane trip from Sydney to Brisbane only takes an hour or so, and isn't expensive. If you can set aside a couple of days, it might be a worthwhile trip.

Well if it helps its not really Sydney we are going to its Newcastle near Sydney :)

I will just have to get my mates to sort it out for us but it would be hard to pass up the opertunity.

Anyway back to the point to this thread.
Steve Irwin was a legend and will be missed all over the world.

I don't wish to denigrate the man's legacy, but when I was in S. africa I came face to face with Rays and sharks and the same in Port Douglas on Agincourt Reef near to where the accident happened.

The creatures are genuinely more scared of us than vice versa and I even stroked a full size ray which responded like a cat or dog.

Irwin had a reputation as a showman and until the footage is released I must assume that he was doing the same trick as he did with the boomslang in one of his progs: provoking a reaction.

It is an old saying here that you reap what you sow.

I mean NO disrespect to him or his family, but Steve knew the risks and acted upon them.

There is noone to blame and I personally feel that any recrimination (as reported by media) against the harmless Stingray is totally unjustified and deserving of the full penalty of the law.

"That sounds familiar...

I am now seriously confused, has someone else said the same thing???

I have only just heard about Steve's incident

News travels slow in Suffolk.
