Criticism please- Up So Close (Cake)

Please ignore the bunk bed (I was 5 when I wanted one). I learned this song about 3 weeks ago and wanted to make sure I was comfortable with it before I recorded anything. What do I need to improve on, besides my funky right hand style?

How did you happen to start picking like that?

I had to listen to the song to see. It sounds like you're letting the notes ring out a little too long in places making it seem like you're uncertain of what to play next. I guess you were not playing this with a metronome or click when you recorded it, so that could be why.

All said and done I think you did a pretty fair job. Just work on the timing a bit.

I didn't really pay attention to my technique book much, and it was much easier to mute the strings. I'm learning alternating index-middle but I can still play with one finger per string about 90% as fast as alternating, and it's much easier to play string to string.

whoa, that's a very funky right hand technique. I'm definitaly not saying that in a bad way, I've just never seen it before. it's pretty funny- it looks like your right hand is completely dead and lifeless cuz it doesn't move once (almost) in the entire song, and your fingers have minds of their own. lol. and again- I'm not saying that in a bad/mean way. it was just amuzing to me.

I few thigns I noticed, and take it for what its worth from an amatuer...

the last note you hit, you finally have your hand in the right position! Knuckles parallel to the finger board.

Now, you dont have any neck coverage isues sicne your fingers are long, but, its still best to learn it right, biomechanically. Its MUCH harder for us old skool players to relearn it!..

It'll help with your 6 or 7 string!

2.) ALWAYS practice with a metronome or drum track. Some of us have meters goign off in our head all teh time, but I STILL fire up my cheap Casio key board and play with a drum track.

PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME. Remember, you are the other time keeper in the band. You and the drummer are like a lock and key.

3.) While your right hand is unorthodox, keep it up. You should be able to generate the speed later on.

COm'on keep drilling! Its the ONLY way to get great!

But remember, make practice purposeful, and use a metronome/drum track!
