Critique My Band's New Single!

This single, Better Than We Think, is a personal favorite of mine, but it's kind of a unique song as far as singles go. Inspirations include Television, Devo, Talking Heads... Homemade music video also came out pretty fun (2nd link)- Hope you like it, Talkbass! But, I have thick skin, if it doesn't work as a single, tell me why? Would love any and all feedback. Thanks in advance!

Pretty good. The chorus didn't do it for me, with that almost pitch-free sing-talking, few can pull that off successfully. ('cepting Mr.s Dylan and Reed. hehe) Only thing I found to whine about.

I didn't hate either. The first was very catchy, but I felt the vocal melody was kind of lacking in the second. A lot of carrying the root with the chord, and not much to join chords together.

Compare that to the first, where the melody repeated, but tied the chords together and had some up and down for hook.

It's also possible that I don't love that deeper, near-yarl vocal tone, and if that's true there may not be a vocal line in the world that brings me in to that :).

Just to clarify, the criticism is because you ask, not because I think it's objectively bad.

In my opinion, I'd want to fix the lead vox..a bit pitchy for me.
I'd bring the lead vox up in the mix

The track is quite sloppy but works so I'd try and keep that..but I probably would re-record it.

You can fix the technicals but you can't fix 'catchy' and I think it is catchy for songs in that genre.

Thanks pepj! As far as the vocals go, that's probably as good as I can do with my limited abilities, I'm sad to say. I am surprised by the sloppy comment though- these were recorded in a pro-level studio with an excellent producer and mastered professionally as well. Either you play with a group that is out of this world tight, or maybe it's just from reviewing the track through a cell phone speaker, which is probably the worst way I could imagine listening to music. Either way, I appreciate the review, and I appreciate you giving it a spin!

If you pitched the track to the right genre or age group, I think it would sit well.
Plenty of top line vocalists are 'pitchy' to my ears but they work.
It almost a style in itself and might be good alongside a punky NYC vibe.
If all your people like it as is, back it and put it out..and good luck.
