Crossover question (Yamaha Club series)

I have 4 sm15v monitors and one has a distinctly different sound coming out. It doesnt sound blown by any means though it seems as if the 15" driver is producing a "full range" sound instead of being crossed over.

Would this be a symptom of a bad crossover?

In the meantime, I have ordered a new crossover from ebay but in the end, the seller was advertising the wrong crossover and sent me a crossover for the sm12v instead of the one for a sm15v

So can anyone tell me if it would be "OK" to use the 12" crossover in place of the 15" version?
The horns are identical with the only difference being the woofer.

Check the wattage on bottom speaker. If the 12 = the 15, then you should be OK to swap.
It's more about the wattage (voltage and impedance) going to each speaker than the speaker size.
I'd guess the 12 is lower wattage than the 15.. which means you could blow another crossover.

PS: I'm no expert and know enough to be dangerous :smug:

The 12 appears to be a stamped frame while the 15 is cast
12 = 350 watts while the 15 cab is 500 watts
The 12 cab goes down to 60hz while the 15 is 55hz

Just at a glance, it appears the white resistors have different ratings between the two crossovers.
I'm thinking my best bet is to get the correct one.
After I contacted the ebay seller, he refunded my money and told me to keep the 12" crossover so if I did ruin it, it wouldnt be more than a time loss, hehehe.

Did you ever find the correct crossover, or did the 15" version work ok? I am in the same boat - I need a replacement crossover for an SM12V but all I can find is 15" versions!

Per the spec sheet, a different crossover is required

15 has:
  • lower crossover--Using a lower crossover will cause a change in tone.
  • higher power rating--I doubt the power handling will have any impact since the SM12V is rated for less.
  • higher sensitivity--The horn may not be padded down as much...meaning a louder horn.
What is wrong with your crossover? Perhaps the faulty component can be identified and replaced.

Amazing! Thanks for this! The problem I have is too much output in the HF driver. When I switch the same horn between multiple cabs it's too bright (loud) on this ONE cabinet. Perhaps it's a blown resister in the crossover, which was put in place to attenuate the HF output to better balance with the woofer? The difference is quite significant: nearly 10dB, I think. Looks like the SM15V crossover would not fix the issue (or at least not completely), since it has higher sensitivity overall.

I believe all of the parts for the crossover are easily sourced, except possibly the inductors. Should be easy for a competent tech to trouble shoot and fix.

The crossover (as shown in the OP) appears to consists of:
  • two polyester capacitors
  • two resistors
  • one electrolytic capacitor
  • two inductors
  • one polyswitch.
  • one circuit board
Did the speaker work properly previously...or is this a new acquisition? If unknown, check to make sure it has the correct crossover.
 
If I recall correctly 😜, I bought the 12" crossover and I have it in the 15" cab. My original failed crossover seemed to allow too much high frequency content to the woofer. I recall the largest coil had burned up color wise. The 12" crossover was an easy direct bolt in. But as Wasnex made clear👍, the 12" crossover still allows more high frequency content to the woofer.

I'm guessing that if you put the 15" version in a 12" cab, you will have a bit less high frequency content coming through the woofer😄

The speaker is a new acquisition- I had 2 previously, and now I have 4. This one had a blown tweeter which I replaced with an Eminence OEM part.

The seller refunded my money on this new pair and said I could keep the speakers. So far I am into this new pair for the just cost of a tweeter ($50). I’d love to get this set up and running. I would be happy to replace x-over components or buy a new board if I could find one.

At this point it looks like 15" x-overs are widely available, but 12" models are not. If yours is working, and if you have any desire to acquire the right part for the 15" cab, I would HAPPILY buy the used 12" x-over from you! LMK...
