Crown XLS 5000 Amp Draw

The XLS 5000 is designed for a 20 amp circuit, but I do not see how it can get the amount of watts it needs from a 20 amp circuit. Does this amp draw more than 20 amp because if you do the math it will need more amps in order to do 5000 watts. Please enlighten me because I am considering getting one of these and don't know if I should because most places don't carry a 40 amp breaker. Any answers are great, Thanks.
 
The AC inlet is a 20-Amp IEC-style with two 20A circuit breakers, with a 20A (120-volt) circuit for each power supply. Most receptacles are rated at 15A. The amp's plug should have horizontal pins, where 15A circuit has vertical.

From what I can find is the amp's max draw is 1950 watts, divided by 110v = 17.7 amps.
 
Not sure why you would need one unless it was for a professional application like subwoofers in a concert setting. Not practical for anything else. Probably unusable for the average guy unless you carry your own power distro.
 
well it is live sound..... but I think it makes more than enough sense that this can run on a 20amp circuit. Also this amp will be for subwoofer applications and only that. I have a couple peavey lo max's I will be running with this thing;).

Actually about half the threads in this forum have nothing to do with PA. Some of the fools can't read.:D Almost none have anything to do with concert PA. Those people post on a real live sound forum not one populated by bass players. As for the OPs question yes it may fun on a 20 amp circuit but It probably should be the ONLY thing on that circuit. So if this is for a bar rig PA you will probably be better off finding something smaller.

We run a 2 Itech9000's on 15 amp circuits with all of our amplifiers mixers and gear all the time. Never blow anything. Just make sure your not asking for 100% all the time is all.
 
First, you can read more about this amp here.

Be sure to avoid turning on more than one amplifier at a time. This particular amp relies on a large amount of capacitance to deliver its rated power. That means its in-rush current when powered on can be very high. I have seen lots of breakers pop from people doing that. Note that the specification table has 3000W in a 20mS burst on one channel, 2000W on both, and none of the power ratings given are listed as continuous. That's because it can't draw all of that power from the AC supply. It relies on the massive capacitance to supply large power bursts and then the capacitors have to be recharged. It's maximum continuous power output is likely somewhere around 1500W, depending on its efficiency, since its back panel label says it draws up to 1950W. Also note that it weighs 62 pounds - yikes.

On a related note, in my soundman days our system had a lot of power and we were very careful to always turn on the high-frequency amps first and test only that signal and then move down the frequency range, one amp at a time. This is because a high frequency signal will not blow subs but a low frequency signal can blow tweeters and horns. So - start with the highs and work your way down, one amp at a time. This also prevents massive in-rush current surges.
 
UL, CSA, CE, and other Standards Groups make amp manufactures rate, cord, and plug-pin amplifiers for max-draw at continuous sine-wave circumstances.

Actually, they allow manufacturers to rate for current draw at typical worst-case usage. Otherwise it would be severe overkill for anything other than test bench applications--i.e., a full-power sine wave test.

I'd liken it to a car with a 300 HP engine and a 25 mpg fuel economy rating. No, you're not going to have it put out 300 HP all the time and still be able to get 25 mpg. But you won't need 300 HP all the time anyway; in normal driving, most of the time you'll be demanding a lot less.

You'll never draw that kind of power under music-program use, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Makes a lot of sense, this is for live outside events though, not bar rigs, I have 6 1X18 subwoofers, all jbl srx subwoofers. They sound phenomenal, but I have 2 xti 6002's and don't want to blow another 2 grand on another one so I am getting the xls 5000. Based on what you guys have said is that its good on a 20 amp circuit so thats what I am going to do. Live sound is such a fun hobby:D
