Crowther Audio Pedals Have Arrived!!

Cameron brought a Prunes & Custard into the store a few weeks back, so I got a chance to plug into it & see what the dealio was... wow!!

It's a pretty crazy pedal - part distortion/overdrive & part harmonic overtone generator. It's almost like a dirty, dirty phaser ("bad phaser, bad boy!!"). I love to let my inner Bootsy out every once in a while, and this is a great pedal for making that happen. And it sounds just as good on fretless as it does on speed bumps!

Paul Crowther also makes an overdrive pedal called the Hotcake, and a two-in one Double Hotcake. I haven't tried either yet, but will shortly. Methinks Cameron has his eye on the HotCake, so we'll probably crank one up this afternoon...

I need to do a clip with the P&C, but I might need to get an external mic involved to really capture the balls of it...

Yeah, the first time I tried Cameron's, I used my fretless 5-string... great googlie mooglie... it was one of those "I don't care what this costs" moments, I knew immediately that I would put one on my board and become a dealer...

I still can't wrap myself around the idea of pedals, but I had to chime in and compliment our man Greg on the recording. Great playing and now you've got me all into the holiday spirit.

I can't "effectively" use 'em. My feet don't work well enough to turn them on and off (when I want) so I'd have to devise some sort of "Whack A Mole" setup to use my hands

But this one does sound 'specially cool

Too bad they don't offer solution for people with your condition. (AFAIK)


It can be possible though.

Maybe midi.

Or a multiple bypass looper operated digitally by wire or remote.
And an aesthetic controlplate on the body of your bass so your fingers can reach it while you can almost simultaneously keep playing.


Do you want to use effects?


I know something can be rigged to accomodate you.
I wish I had a little more know how on fabricating electronic devices.
If I was capable of producing such devices I sure would help you out.

Then I could connect said effects processor/pedalboard to such unit and command by voice using a lapel mic ala cell phones. (ie; 3 on/off 4 on/off).

Development would have to be something the "average pro" might use rather than just a handful of cats who jam in similar situations as mine. Unit could be used to remotely control soundboards etc.

I think it'd be marketable but who am I but a Cowboy with a hitch in my giddyup

I'd use effects if they were "accessable" but at this point I could talk my Pop into operating both of our pedalboards. 'Least then I could sit back laughing while he "Riverdanced"

I don't think voice control would be a great idea. I think it will be a drag to operate it in the long run.


There is such a thing as The Switchblade, a MIDI line selector and switching system. All you need then is a small MIDI controller on your bass.


But I have a vision of something. Not MIDI.
A multiple pedal looper. Let's say 5 loops. So a unit with 5 "sends" and 5 "returns", and an input for your bass and an output for your amp. (Even have that unit have a power supply for pedals so you have that unit acting as a master switch.)

Instead of stomp buttons like on a regular signal looper, electricly operated switches.
A digital system to operate those switches.
One little wire for the digital signals running to your bass (may be taped to your instrument cable).
A nice ergonomic and aesthetic controller attached on your bass. With buttons like a cellphone for example, or more touch sensitive.
So 5 buttons in a row.

So if you are a fingerstyle player you can place the controller above your strings, between the neck and the bridge, the in-lineness of the 5 buttons parallel with the strings, so you can switch them on with your thumb.
Or if you are a pick player, same thing but place the conroller under your strings (to the side of the bass controls) so you can push the buttons with your ringfinger and/or pink.


How does that sound to you?

Very interesting Idea. Only thing that would concern me is feasability of production and or marketability for others.
