CTM 300 Review and Operation

Ashdown amps can sound awesome, but I have found their tone controls to be a bit quirky. After spending some time with a CTM300 I thought I would write this in an effort to help others get the most out of their amps.

The following is IMHO and based on my experience with my particular amp…YMMV. For reference, I used a pair of home-built EV TL405s speakers loaded with EVM18Bs and a Series 1 Yamaha TRB6P bass.

The CTM300 is the most heavily voiced/least transparent, quality amp I have ever played. Vintage, thick, punchy, tight, growly, snarly, and grindy are words I would use to describe its basic tone. Very much in the SVT tonal universe but the CTM lacks extended highs so it is hard to find a glassy or hifi tone. Similar low-mid push to an SVT, but the top end tends to be more snarly (upper mid drive) than grindy (high drive). Tightest lows of any tube amp I have played and can be a bit dryer and more articulate than an SVT. The CTM can produce solid and full bass, but not super deep bass. Volume wise the CTM seems slightly louder and less compressed than the blue line and skunkworks SVTs I have compared it to.

Initially I had a hard time getting a good sound out of the CTM. Eventually, I found the secret is keeping the tone controls below 11 o’clock. The EQ bands interact significantly with each other and for higher settings do not function in a very intuitive manner. On most amps, a good starting point is all tone controls at noon, I would suggest starting with the CTM’s tone controls at 9 o’clock. There is a lot of tonal variation available between 7 and 10 o’clock.

Buttons:
Mellow Increases gain and low mids and gently rolls of the highs. Change is similar to engaging the shift button, but pre EQ.
Deep Scoops out mids.
Shift Raises the upper knee of the bass control well into the mid-bass range.
Bright Greatly emphasizes high mids. Pretty much unusable except when the mellow button is engaged. Might be useful with a darker voiced fridge.

EQ Controls:
Bass Effects mostly low bass with shift button disengaged. Extends well into mid bass when shift button is engaged. Effective range of this control is fairly limited and boost maxes out around 10 o’clock. For driven tones, some subtle shaping of the distortion occurs as the control is increased past 10 o’clock.
Middle Fairly wide band and seems to extend above the response of the treble control. Lots of range on this control and it completely swamps out the bass control and, to some degree, the treble control if pushed above about 10 o’clock.
Treble Fairly wide band, boosting primarily mids to high mids. Increasing control above 11 o’clock adds little additional high end emphasis but increasingly rolls off the lows making the overall tone mid focused. Truest highs are obtained with the treble off and the bass and middle at about 9 o’clock.

Because the tone controls are so interactive, it is often necessary to adjust two controls instead of one to achieve the desired tonal balance.

Favorite Settings (all buttons out)

(Bass/Middle/Treble)
9/9/0 Classic tube tone with the most extended lows and highs; as well as, the most even response.
9/8/11 As the treble control is turned up the amp becomes snarly and mid focused. A slight decrease of the middle control can be used to offset some of the additional mid drive from the treble control.

Overdrive: Tonally one of the best bass overdrive sounds I have heard: dark and even across the tonal spectrum. With the mellow button engaged, the fundamental pops out clearly even with the gain maxed. Unfortunately the distortion is not very touch sensitive with the installed tubes. Rolling tubes in V1 and V2 might help with the touch a bit, but in my experience 12DW7/7247/ECC832 tube types do not have as much drive and tonal variation as 12AX7/7025/ECC83 tube types.

Technical Issues:
The amp came to me (previously new) with a 6.5V meter bulb. I went through a couple of those quickly before I measured and found the voltage applied to the lamp is 8V. I couldn’t find any 8V lamps domestically, so I spec’d out two 14V lamps: #1487 lamp 2.8W, 14V, 3,000 hrs and #258 lamp 3.78W, 14V, 500 hrs. #258 looks better but I opted for the longer life #1487 which is a bit dim (looks extremely vintage). I also found a couple of viable 12V lamps but they were only rated for 250 hrs. For those in the UK, Ashdown recommends an 8V BARTHELME 00640850.

Bias—Originally the output tubes could not be biased above 20% and the amp was not making much power. I replaced the 47K bias ranging resistor with a 33K, 3W resistor and was able to bias a set of significantly mismatched KT88s to spec. Ashdown recommends biasing the output tubes to 28ma and says this is achieved when the CTM’s bias meter indicates 12 o’clock.

Low drive and early distortion—On a couple of occasions the preamp started loosing drive and distorting at low levels. Reseating V1 and V2 cleared the problem. The amp has JJ ECC832s in these positions, and from what I understand, JJs have smaller pins than most other tubes, which can lead to problems. Last time I had the amp open to reseat the JJs, I rolled in a GE and Raytheon 7247. Both had extended highs over the JJs and definitely had bigger pins.

Bottom Line: If you want a snarling, belching beast, this may be the amp for you.

I know my CTM-30 has a Fender style tone stack - flat is something like 0-10-0 AKA bass and treble are boost only and midrange is cut only.

Totally different preamp my friend. I would expect the CTM30/LB30 (same circuit) to sound more like the amps in the dual tube series which included the Small Block 427, Touring 550, and Touring 330. All of these amps have 12AX7 based preamps whereas the CTM100 and CTM300 have a 12DW7 based preamp. IMHO the dual tube preamp is very smooth and clean while the CTM100/300 preamp has a much stronger mid-range voice and gets gnarly at the drop of a hat.

Pardon my ignorance, but I have a CTM 300 as well and I would like to head off any potential problems before they start. Where did you get your bias resistor from and are the 12DW7 pre amp tubes able to be swapped out for the 12AX7s?

As long as your amp is operating properly I recommend leaving the bias ranging resistor alone. FYI: Per Ashdown, the larger resistor was installed specifically to protect the amp. For bias instructions, see page three of the attached CTM manual. As long as you can bias each tube to around 12 o'clock on the meter you should be good to go. Per Ashdown, biasing the amp any higher than 12 may actually decrease output power.

If your amp is not operating properly, the repair should be performed by a qualified technician. While replacing the bias ranging resistor is an easy fix, the safety of you and the amp are at stake. FYI: The CTM300 power supply provides around 700 volts.

I used a Xicon metal oxide resistor that I bought from Mouser (my usual source). Other sources include MCM Electronics, Tube Depot, Antique Electronic Supply, Digikey, Angela Electronics, Hoffman Amps, etc. Which source I use depends upon the vendor's availability of a specific part and what else I am buying.

Generally, you should not swap 12DW7 and 12AX7 tube types. The 12DW7 is half 12AX7 and half 12AU7. 12AX7 and 12AU7 have different gain structures and different operating points; so it would be necessary to modify the CTM300 for 12AX7 tubes to operate properly.

The CTM300 uses two ECC832, two ECC82, and one ECC99. FYI: Different names for ECC832 include 7247 and 12DW7. NOS GE 12DW7/7247 are typically high quality and can be found for about $20.

Thanks for the info. I've been bitten one too many times by the electricity bug to even consider doing any of that on my own. We have a great tube amp tech here in Knoxville and I was just wondering if those were problems inherent in the amp that needed to be addressed before they became even more expensive ones. I have not noticed any problems with mine, but I generally keep it pretty clean and at lower volumes.

Oh I think there are at least two or three good tricks in a CTM 300/100; some that you won't find anywhere else. It excels at a variety of finger and pick styles, especially if you like a bit of drive; there is even a good vintage slap tone. The key is in the the name, "Classic Tube Magnifier." IMHO, this amp has a very unique and distinctive voice, but if you want/need "modern" look elsewhere.

I was pretty frustrated with the CTM300 until I figured out how well it works when you keep the EQ settings on the low side. I suspect the tone stack is a variation on a Fender tone stack, but the values of the components were chosen so the bands are highly interactive. Some people like the interaction, but I like things to be a bit more predictable and intuitive.

Different component values can be chosen for the classic Fender tone stack so the bands hardly interact at all. In fact, I find that vintage Fender amps like the Showman have a well behaved tone stack with only a bit of interaction between the bands. Very predictable and easy to use and one of my favorite amps. The Orange AD200B uses a Fender styled tone stack and sounds/behaves a lot like a Showman on steroids. If you like the basic voice of the amp, it is very easy to dial in.

By far, the best tone stack of any tube amp I have played is the Sadowsky SA200. IMHO, the most musical and versatile tube bass amp ever made. If I could only keep one tube amp, it would be the Sadowsky. As I am not limited in this way, I will keep the CTM300 because it covers some ground better.

Still kicking with Ashdown - an originAL 300 into a 414h.

I was playing the CTM through a berg cab- which was very very articulate- yet struggled to get out of uber-vintage tone territory.

It probably didn't help my love for the amp when it had multiple soldering issues that needed fixing.
 
Yeah it is pretty cool indeed.

STUPID GAS THOUGH.

The 414h has somewhat of a hole in the upper mids, so it can be difficult to coax the clarity out of the head.

To anyone considering one of these amps this paragraph is the most accurate description you will find. There is very little versatility in this amp. I do not recommend it for extended range players, but if you do classic rock with a pick on a Fender you’ll be hard pressed to find a better tone.

I will be returning mine. For the cost I demand more functional EQ for an easier user experience on stage. It is hard to add lows to this amp without adding honking mids. All of my solid state offerings blow it out of the water in this regard and it is important to me. I wish I still had my V4B to test against, but I am certain it had more sub bass content. The CTM300 is a snarling beast in the mids and it is hard to tame without turning the tone to mush.

I’m sad to return it, but it is not for me. I had high hopes and it might be the coolest looking amp ever. They recently updated the looks and I haven’t seen any photos of the new face until I unboxed mine. Here’s a grainy shot from my single digit iPhone (shuttle 6.2 included for scale).

Sorry it's not working. IMHO, it's a great amp but I agree it seems fairly rock specific to me, and the tone controls can be perplexing

Did you try the EQ trick I suggested. It took me months to figure this out. Start with the tone rotaries at 9:00 and constrain adjustments to +/- 2. So you can adjust down to 7:00 or up to 11:00. Within this range the controls seem fairly intuitive and there are a lot of good sounds. You can obviously adjust higher, but it may produce the opposite of what your expect or no change at all.

The Bass control on mine seems to max out about 10:00. I think it probably extends the LF cutoff lower as you crank the control above 10:00, but I can't really hear any change.

The Treble control sort of works backwards, unless the mid control is almost totally CCW. As you turn up the Treble control, it seems to add a very slight boost in the lowish mids, but it does not add air or glass up top. IMHO, the truest and most hifi treble seem to be with the control fully CCW. At higher settings it starts sucking out low bass.

The Mid control dominates above about 11:00. In other words if you turn the mid control too high, the position of the Bass and Treble controls doesn't matter.

The push buttons may be more useful than the tone rotaries.

It can be a challenge to get a clean signal through the front end of the preamp. If you want clean, try the other input.

Did they really redesign the faceplate so the model name is covered by the cabinet?
