Cultural/Stereotypical contradictions....got any?

I think the average person picks his personal development battles. If I tried to actively improve myself in every skill I use at work, with my hobbies, or out in my community, I'd have to stop sleeping and get some kind of time machine to make each day 35 hours long.
When the boss offers me some training opportunities, I turn half of them down because I'm already doing the other half and spending hours and hours a week honing other skills I'm using on the clock. Watching my friends, they seem to do the same thing. I've concluded that most the people I had labeled apathetic slugs simply have different priorities than I do; they choose not to develop in the way I think is best because they're focused on whatever they've deemed most important. Since I'm not with them 24 hours a day, I happen to miss out on the way(s) they are trying to better themselves.
A friend of mine used to have a bumper-sticker which read "Nuke a gay whale for Jesus!" Underneath, in much smaller print, was "This sticker offends everyone."

I look like a long-haired hippie but my politics are far from hippie. Sometimes people will say things to me expecting me to come back with "right on, man" or something to that effect when in fact, whatever they said runs very counter to my way of thinking.....then they hand me a joint without even asking if I smoke.
With respect to the self-motivation thing.... There are a whole lot of people that don't have any as long as the bills are paid, the bellies are full, and they're entertained, however, take away just one of those things and all of a sudden there's a problem.
Wow... You totally missed it! He said in the same sentence that the govt fed him while he was down, but self-contradicted by then saying no one gave him anything. Get it? His entire statement was an oxymoron.
I took it to mean he was given a "hand out" and not a "hand up". As in, the hand out really didn't do anything for him in the long run, just pacified him for one day.
No, that's not what he was saying. In fact it was a rant against the very government services he benefitted from, a very irony-challenged rant.
But let's examine this hand-out vs hand-up idea. If you're hungry, you need food. Now. Not a garden, not a packet of seeds, but a hot meal. Whether the hungry person uses it as a hand-up or a hand-out is entirely dependent on them, not on the meal.
I find the flimsy justification for gutting SNAP odious in light of the current business and tax climate: business profits at record hush, stock mkt at record highs, cash squirreled away by businesses and bank also at all time high. But personal investment in new businesses is very low, and thus unemployment is high. Relying on corporations to do the right thing proves, once again, to be a fool's bet. This entire line of thinking you espouse is actually very ugly when examined in the cold, harsh light of reality.
I really did not want to bring politics into this. Craig T. Nelson was as self-contradictory as one can get, and while you might reinterpret his words, no deep thought was intended with that statement. It was blunt, therefore contradictory and ironic, and suitable for this thread.

You do have some very valid points there. You know the system is broken when the stock market, ceo compensation, and unemployment are at record highs and wages are at record lows, all at the same time.
You know, wages really haven't risen much at all since the '70's, yet cost of living has at least doubled?
They got us where they want us. It now takes both parents working just to make ends meet and the feds have all day long to indoctrinate the kids. This didn't happen by mistake.

I was walking out of the supermarket to my truck with my son who was six at the time. This guy in a big charcoal BMW stops to wait for us to get across the cross walk. A little surprise there.
As he's waiting for us to cross, another vehicle comes from the other direction and nearly hits us. BMW guy jumps out and start yelling and cursing at the other driver for nearly hitting a father and child. I was so surprised by his outburst that I didn't say anything to the other driver who had taken off. I did say a big thank-you to BMW guy.

When I was much younger and had just fallen off the turnip truck, I met a spectacularly beautiful woman with a British accent. She confused the hell out of me, because she was also very obviously not what I thought an English person looked like. At the time, I didn't know they had black people in England. Boom! There goes a mental construct I had carried around with me. She's still spectacularly beautiful, and she actually married me. Boom! Another mental construct goes bang - bass player with beautiful wife? How did that happen, anyway?
There was a band from England called Moak that used to tour here years back. We got to play with them on the same bill a couple times and the singer was a black guy. You didn't hear the british accent come through much while he was singing, but he did throw some people off when he started talking to them, especially other black people, they were like, what???
Pretty sure "they have" black people (almost) everywhere.

If you even watch any british tv, you'll see blacks everywhere. You know what you'll see a whole damn lot too? Interracial couples. I swear you almost cannot watch a british show without seeing one and it is sad that I should even notice. But here in north america you know, its still a a thing somehow... "What?!?! you mean a black person and a white person!?!? in a couple??!? That is just CRAZY!"
