I hate to be a buttinsky, but I've read through the whole thread and don't recall seeing this particular model configuration/finish or even this series logo. but from what I can gleam Greg wasn't always the most consistent building builder around (which I think adds to the brands charm). so what do y'all think? is it on the up-and-up? I suspect there's quite a bit of wiggle room on the price, but is it even in the ballpark these days?

[Edit: I suppose the link would help... Curbow Retro Petite 5-String Fretless 1995 Greg's original USA made Pearl White Sparkle Petite 5 ! | Reverb]

[Edit 2: Greg Curbow was a musical instrument builder, not a building.]

From what I recall, the Retros were basically the same shape as Petites, but will flat bodies and no exotic top. Early ones usually had pick guards, and either JJ or sweetspot pickup arrangements, with 4 or 5 strings. There were later ones with no pick guard and soapbar/J pickups. It was an attempt to make a slightly more traditional-looking and affordable instrument, I think, but I couldn't tell you want the expected pricing would be these days.

Hi fellow Curbow owners, I wanted to write because I inherited a Petite 5 with basically no information, so I am trying to learn as much as I can before I consider selling it. I've got the bass and the original case, and the serial is 9634, but Im not sure what Gregs serial number convention was. Any information would be really helpful. Thanks!

Firstly - condolences on whatever lead to the inheritance.

Secondly: that's a beautiful bass! Since it has a figured wooden top, I think it might be an IEP (International Exotic Petite). I think the numbering convenion was YY-SN, (i.e. 2-digit year + serial number), which would put this at 1996. It might be the same year from which my Rockwood Petite is from. Absence of pickup adjustment screws in the front also suggests a similar vintage.

I'm not sure about pricing advice, but unless you're in urgent need to sell it - I would consider hanging onto it for a while, and seeing how you get along with it. They are exceptional instruments, and I doubt you'll easily come across another one like it if you do get rid of it.

Thanks for the help and the nice words. I've had it a few years (there were like 50 instruments) and just got back to it in the closet. I am more of a guitar player, and so while I can really appreciate its rarity and quality, I also kind of feel like its potential is lost on me and it should be played by someone who can appreciate it more. I know I'll probably never see another one if I sell it, but I still have like 15 basses crowding my space.
