A couple of questions about current recording software products (from someone who has not used recording software in about 10 years…..)
1. Is there a product that combines
i. a transcribing / composing software like the Finale products, and
ii. a basic recording program
the goal would be to take the rough sketch of a song, created in something like Finale, and replace the written parts with live recorded parts. For example; assume I have created a basic drums, bass and guitar composition by writing out the parts. The Finale type product turns that into a funny sounding but useful approximation of the playback of that written composition. I would then like to replace each of the parts by playing along and overdubbing actual drum, bass and guitar parts.
I know that some products allow me to export a midi file from the written composition that I could then import into a multi-track recording software, but is there a product that makes that step unnecessary? A product that would allow those written tracks to show up as just more tracks on the overall multitrack recording? As I play along and record a live bass part to an unused track, I can then delete the written bass track (or, if I wanted to, keep both versions)
2. back in the real world………what is the simplest, most basic multi-track recording package for use on PC (not MAC)? For a little perspective, what is the 1" eight track of multi-track recording software? A product for someone who will not be altering waveforms, using ANY fx; I just want a basic recording platform that will allow live recording of at least 4 to 6 tracks and the ability to overdub a couple of more tracks. Except for the request in #1 above, all recording will be actual live recording = instrument into mic into preamp into recording software. And while the initial use will be for building up compositions one track at a time, the ultimate goal would be for this same product to work well when recording a live band (and yes, 6 simultaneous live tracks is MORE than enough for a basic r&b combo). Suggestions?
