Curtis Novak's Darkstar bisonic pickup...

I have a question regarding pickup height adjustment. When turning the adjustment screws does it adjust the height of the individual poles? Also I am thinking about installing one of these in my P bass is their a "Sweet" spot to place it?
Thanks!

I recent bought a custom p with a Darkstar right here on Talkbass. The pickup is pretty much right in the p sweet spot area and it sounds fantastic.
You might need to shim the neck a bit and then raise up the bridge saddles in order to get enough clearance between the strings and the pickup body while keeping the action low. The pickup with it's chrome bezel tends to sit higher than conventional p pickups.

I find the Darkstar to have two distinct tones depending on how aggressively the strings are plucked. Using tapewound strings, I find the tone mellow in a vintage way, but with an extended response when the strings are struck not too aggressively. With aggressive action, the sound gets downright funky and overdriven sounding. Makes me think of Larry Graham. Overall, the pickup has a very high output for a passive unit. I'd say that with the Darkstar in the p spot, the sound is not unlike a p, but it dos have a more extended response. It sounds deeper on the bottom end, and yet has more extended highs on the top end. The sensitivity to finger pressure takes some getting used to, but is a lot of fun when you do get used to it.

the new bs-1 by Guild is wound less hot then the original Hagstrom 12,5 k-ohm) or the darkstar.

I own a seymour duncan booster. Would this help me to get the same saturated sound as an original hagstrom pickup when i would buy the new bs-1 pick up by Guild?

my newest bass in my stable. a Custom BilT Volaré Bass, the first of its kind. with Curtis Novaks DS/BS.
I also own a Fender Starcaster. no competition!
this one is lighter, more resonant, overall thinner body, and barks like no ones business!

Awesome! Is that BilT's first bass? I was wondering when they would make one. Enjoy!
