Custom 210/112 cab

This cab kind of came from me wanting a 212 guitar cab for heavier music and finding out that the most compact cabs by the guy who built my bass cabs are about the same volume as a Mesa oversized 212. Then I was like: Okay if I'm having something built anyway, why not make something more interesting. What I ended up with after a bunch of brainstorming (and beers) was what I thought would be great for heavy detuned guitar and driven bass tones.

I asked my guy if he could fit 2 10s and a twelve in a cab of the volume I was targeting and he gave me the thumbs up. 61/57/35 (cm, h/w/d) is what we settled on. A tad less deep than his bass cabs and volume wise still on par with the Mesa 212. So it's the 10s up top with the 12 below. The cab is partitioned of course. The 12's section is ported towards the bottom but can be plugged easily. 10s in series with the 12 parallel for 5.33 Ohms.

I did lots of research on speakers. I wanted this to be a mean rock/metal machine ready for fuzz and overdrive. But not too tight and modern. I also decided to go local (European) with the speakers while trying to save some weight. I've settled on Jensen Mod 10-70s and a Faital Pro 12PR300 to extend their range. The 12 saves at least some weight. I couldn't find 10" neos with a real nasty grind in the mids.

I'm now waiting till Hans of FMC cabs finds the time to get to it which will be another couple weeks.

10s in series with the 12 parallel for 5.33 Ohms.

You gonna run them together. Those tens will blow before the twelve is really thumping leaving a lot on the table.

Run the 10's and 12 separately with a duel amp head or two amps so you can balance the volume and tone controls to get the best out of the cab.

Yeah, your understanding of power is in fact somewhat limited. Specifically the power handling of the 10's.

The Mod 10-70's have a very small Xmax and Xlim, which means that the mechanical power handling at low frequencies (even in a sealed cabinet) will end up being small (around 40-50 watts rms) below 100Hz.

For total power handling, the 10" drivers in series will be 16 ohms and the 12 will be 8 ohms.

The 10's will see 1/3 of the total power and the 12 will see 2/3 of the total power. With the mechanical power handling of each 10 being say 50 watts, the total mechanical power handling of the 10" section is ~100 watts. Proportionally, the 12" driver will receive 200 watts, the total power handling being 300 watts.

PROPERLY TUNED, the 12" driver alone is capable of over 300 watts mechanically.

The other issue is that combining a ported and sealed cabinet can result is some very unpredictable results, especially with such hugely different driver types.

Plugging the port generally results in poor performance, and usually less power handling and SPL percent of applied power. Does your builder understand how driver TS parameters and cabinet tuning work, or are they just a guitar box builder?

Also all depends on what your wanting SPL wise. If all of this is to be run off a 50 watt guitar amp, there's a chance it would all survive and make proper noise. As Agedhorse has stated, once you introduce a proper bass amp with any kind of giging power, odds are stacked against it working as your imagining.

It can be fun (and expensive) to dream/experiment, but understanding the workings behind what your dreaming about can go a long way towards success.

I would be inclined to build a 112 and a 210, two separate cabs. Still with different types of drivers they may not work well together.

Just as an update. Thanks to your feedback I've decided to keep it guitar only and as a 212. I stayed with the dimensions of his compact 212 but horizontal instead of vertical (70/41 cm w/h) and 6 cm less depth (35 cm). No ports and light padding only on top and bottom. In case anyone is curious the speakers are Jensen Tornado SEs. Use case is heavy detuned guitar for stoner/sludge/doom where the increased depth compared to most guitar cabs should be an advantage and make up for the smaller width and height compared to other 212s. With the speakers being neos this will be light and portable.

This is how it turned out. 2 Jensen Tornado SEs (100 W each) with a weight of 14.9 kg (32.8 lbs).
