Custom Cello rebuild to bass pick ups

Anybody here did the same ? customizing a cello to be bass tuned EADG? I have one made and trying to play it and bowing , I fitted steel strings size 31 inch short scale , but not satisfied so in short time will swop for vynil labella's , but other fact I had fitted at first a guitar pickup ( kind of acoustic guitar magnetic pickup) at the end of the fingerboard and not happy with the result since the bridge is not flat and distance of strings is different from basguitar resulting the A and D string sounding not loud enough , also had a lot of trouble with resonating on the 'A' ( Wolffs resonations ? ) anyway this week I swopped the pick up for a big ceramic plate under the bridge on the E side and what a relief , the ( 'A' Wolfss resonation is gonne ! ) a very big difference and now the sound is much more Woody like an upright bass , off course the cello is a bit prone to picking up other noises since the ceramic is now part of the soundbox of the cello , making any touching of the wood resulting in a woody sound .. and the amp and speaker must be positionend a few meters away to avoid microfonic feedback , but my question is there anybody who has done the same job and what are the experiences ??? my next jobs on it , besides swopping the strings I will fit a new bridge more to my likings to reposition the distance of strings to the fingerboard , it's an interesting challenge to make a unique instrument ( due to my left hand problem : rheuma over the years ( 73) in the fingers making me change from standup bass to standard electric bassguitar , to shortscale fretless bass Viola Epi ,and Hofners , now even shorter scale cello modified to bass. And yes I am learning to use a bow on the bass :-)

i've never done what you're doing --- but i think what you're doing is very cool! i'm glad that your cello modifications are working out for you. also: nice collection of instruments you have. your fretless instruments are impressive.

i hope you get some responses! good luck!

The closest thing I can think of to this is Ron Carter's Piccolo bass though I do not know the tuning. it sounds interesting. Keep us posted. I would love to hear the result good or bad. with a 27 ish string length it seems like it would be pretty tight with the diameter strings you might need. My concern is that you may find the fingerboard to narrow but possibly you could have a neck built or possibly a wider fingerboard somehow.

I think this is worth a shot. Best of luck.
