Custom J-Bass (i know, another custom bass thread)

thanks to all of you!!!

kimb76, stingray69, Dan Knowlton, Stumbo, musicelectronix , and specially to Andy Will, LowBSix and sungjin891118.

you guy helped me a lot on this one! i decided to get a 34" with a string thru/top load set up. the best of both worlds. 34 by top load, and maybe a 35 by string thru. does it makes sense? plus less troubles finding a string for replacement.

now back to my custom bass. my top wood will be arriving in few days and soon the building will start. i will be posting pics of the step by step process until this project is done!

cheers!!!

No problem Mate!

And as a special teaser for my next 'upcoming' thread.........here is a pic of my next custom 'Work in progress' Bass (many of the components will be similar to yours Phatbass, just with a single EMG 35TW instead of the Nordstrands) ;):

no problem :D

here's some pics of my bass in progress. it was sent to my by my luthier just this morning.

he started the neck first because my top wood hasn't arrive yet due to some problems in the government here in Thailand. as you all know, the airport has been closed for few days now. so if the top wood won't come soon, i guess i will go for a Quilted Maple top instead of my Spalted Maple top. my luthier has the Quilted Maple in stock so that's why i might take it.

hey Dan, does you Lakland has string thru body set up?

I've had it strung both ways and am using the TI flats on it now - and can't really hear a difference all the time - must be my old ears because my amps/cabinets should let me hear any difference (Glockenklang and Genz Shuttle 6.0, Accugroove Tri115 and the Berg HT/EX stack). Or maybe it does not make a big difference (I know, heresy!).

Dan K.

Dan thanks for the info. i decided finally to get a 34" with an option of string thru body, so i get the best of both worlds. maybe you're right, maybe the difference is not that big and noticeable, i will let you know once this bass is made.

w33nie,
thanks for the compliment! i hope that this turns out well as i expected. its my first bass with LED's! should be cool!!!

no pics yet. just wanted to inform you guys that there's a slight change in my custom bass.

as you all know that the airport here in Thailand was closed for more than a week due to their government problems. so my top wood, spalted maple is still somewhere out there, i don't know when its gonna arrive here. luckily my luthier gave me an option. he has a beautiful quilted maple top and he offered me to replace the spalt, so i went for it. so now instead of spalted maple with natural color, i went for quilted maple top, tobacco burst.

i will post some more pics of the neck once its done.

thanks for looking!

new pics!!!

here are some pics taken lately. swamp ash body with quilted maple top. the body is chambered a little bit. like i said before, its gonna be a tobacco burst.

thanks for looking guys! i appreciate it! yes, its kinda quick because he's doing just my bass right now. he's kinda really concentrating much of his time on this project. the rest should have to wait. usually he does a lot of repairs and mods, not much of custom orders lately. i got lucky!

i will post more pics as soon as i got some!

because non of the J's available have the specs that i want. like wood, top, hardwares. can you find me a Fender with all this specs? i doubt man. maybe a Sadowsky or some boutique basses, which are actually custom basses as well. and it will cost me double or more of the price i'm gonna pay for this custom bass.

good question by the way! :-)
