I currently have 2 Big Als (4 and 5 SSS) and a Sterling 5 HS on order. Sold some new era Fenders as I just wanted more EBMMs.

The Musicman factory doesn't stockpile any instruments at all. Everything ordered is built to order, so if you place an order, you will be waiting roughly ~4 months to receive your bass. Maybe see if GC can do stock-checks from other stores.
I've ordered several times from MM, but only when the bass I wanted didn't exist in any store.

That's an interesting point there. Hopefully I won't be having another G.A.S. attack for something else in the meantime!

On a sidenote, does anyone know how much more/less custom order instruments are than similar models found on a showroom floor?

Nothing is custom. Everything is built to order at the same price.
