Custom Performer/Supersonic bass

Just like I took on the Performer, I'm getting itchy for another "what if?" bass based on my favorite Fender guitar that was never put into production - The '66 Maurader. Fender did create the (well thought-out/designed) Jaguar bass which could be it's cousin. You can see I've already copped the cool natural/painted headstock concept for my SS. If Fender did an authentic re-issue of it, I'd be tempted to learn how to play guitar! :rollno: Meanwhile.., what if it were a bass...

If you do a Marauder bass, you've gotta do it with hidden pickups like the original Marauder prototype!

The picture posted isn't a true Marauder, as far as I understand it. The originals had regular Fender headstocks. This image was a custom build, possible from someone on offsetguitar.com?

"Marauder" was a great model name. 'Tis a shame they never produced them.

Also, it's not a Fender, but probably the closet thing you can get to a Marauder in a new-production instrument:

Thanks for making me aware of the "Relevator" (talk about unfortunate names! :rollno:) It appears it is only made as a guitar. Figures that someone riffed off of that design already. I am aware of the 'hidden pick-up' prototype Fender guitar and since it didn't work then... A way around it would be to make a light-wave version to keep the body visually 'pick-up less'. Otherwise the pic is a Fender Maurader, a prototype as well (neither version was ever put into production)

I've since started a Jaguar bass project, so for now a bass Maurader is on the back burner. Actually "Maurader" is growing on me.., sort of Leo like the G&L "Interceptor" bass... :rolleyes: Should start a thread coming up w/unlikely bass names; "Thudmaster", "Boomcaster", "Bottomfeeder"... :smug:

Mostly. But It's also Phx proper.
No culture, no nightlife, no proper public transportation system, urban sprawl, rapacious development, ignorant politicians, governmental idiocy, rampant car culture (and many lifted trucks), hobbyist musicians starting cover bands for pay to play clubs or casinos, constant "me too" with regards to Cali, including air quality... All that and 9 months of summer.
It's one of the largest cities in the US, and it's really a pit.

Not quite Detroit yet, but, ya know, with a little bit of effort, I think we could get there. :D

At least Flag has snow sometimes.

You're sayin' pit like it's a bad thing... :rolleyes: sorry to have opened a scab wraub.., I can imagine such. I've lives in a few states over the years and for example my good impressions of Cincinnati Ohio where I lived shortly were always offset by similar issues. CA has it's share of negatives but since '90 I can't imagine living anywhere else. Hang in there!

Yeah, I've been through Cincy, that was enough for me. ;D

Worst thing about being here, for me, is I lived in Brooklyn before this. From the awesome to the sad.
Grew up here, went there, came back (family stuff). Wasn't worth it.

Actually the picture is of a legit Marauder MkII prototype, however a friend of mine built a replica based on this very example: Invalid Link Removed

Interesting. I knew there was a MkII prototype, but the only version I've seen over the years has been this version with a standard CBS-style headstock:

So I guess the Marauder MkII was the first use of the headstock style that would eventually end up on the Starcaster.

Yes, and the '66 prototype II version (w/standard headstock and exposed pu's) had angled frets. Interestingly enough, Rickenbacker tried angled frets in '68 on their 360SF guitar. Roger Rossmeisl worked w/Ric in the '50's and in the '60's for Fender. :eyebrow: Related or not, the Maurauder/Starcaster headstock incorporated a subtle version of his signature "German carve."

But I'm afraid it wouldn't be cheap either! :rolleyes:

I was just jamming w/friends w/it earlier and just love playing/hearing it. Crazy nice.

Just wow! 1983! This is a very unique piece of Fender history! The bridge on it looks like what was produced for the later Elite line but with a angled shape to go with the curvy body shape - a one-off for sure! The sculpted tuners were the same design/style also used on the Elite series. Plus it has an extra mini-toggle switch. (?) And the hs logo (sans model name) pre-dates the 90's to current (original) Fender spaghetti-font logo. Super cool :cool::cool::cool:

The bidding has started so it will be interesting to see what it brings in. Considering what it is, $4k to start with seems correct. The made one year only (July 85-July 86) Performers usually sell for under $2k but this is the prototype and all things considered is very unique not only for that model but for Fender in general. Consider what the 1949 Broadcaster prototype or the 1959 prototype Jazz bass w/5 pole soapbar type pu's would be worth today.
