Custom singlecut 6 str for Bobby K.

Spectacular!
Congratulations, Bobby, and Kudos, Wilser!
I’ll confess I was dubious about the rear colored burst.
It reeeally adds to the “Spectacularity-ness”!

Wilser:
Is this your 1st side-mounted input jack?
I remember your telling me how much you LOOOVED side mounted jacks!;)
Any other 1sts on this build?

no, but I didn't enjoy doing it either! ;)

I tried to convince bobby not to do it, but he threatened to leave dog doody filled paperbags in flames on my front door if I didn't oblige. Seriously, he said this was as important to him as any other ergonomic feature on the bass and I had already said yes (I still can't remember typing up that email! he probably caught me on one of those "yes, sir" trances I sometimes go into) so there was no argument on my part. I'm adding a "things I won't do or not optional" section to my website and this is definitely going in there, so bobby, this is the last side mounted jack I'm doing and you got it, baby.

This is also my first "public" burst. I had some some burst on scrap and sacrificial bodies before I offered it to make sure I could do it right and part of the reason to include it on this bass (in addition to the main reason which was that it makes it look cooler) was to have something to show for future reference.

I had dome some magnet held covers before, but never all of them.

I don't quite understand Wilser's dislike of side-mount jacks, but I *can* say that you basically have to design your cavity around them, or you risk the jack interfering with the pots, etc. They can be a pain to put in...

What's the deal with the side jack? I was spec'ing out a custom a few years ago and he told me he wouldn't do them, but he told me it was because he had crushed his cavities by accidentally setting the bass down with the cord still in the jack.

I didn't argue (ultimately didn't get the bass) but I kind of felt like he was saving me from a problem only clutzes would have. I've never had this happen or seen it on any basses with side jacks. I personally don't like the front mount jack... a little Wishnevsky if you ask me. :hiding:

Perhaps if it's no harder you could offer a rear mounted jack? Would be the best of both worlds I would think.

Am I the only one who knows "The Accüsed" here?

Do I win something???

FINALLY!!!! it seems you and me are the only ones, buddy. You win bragging rights as being more musically diverse than anyone on the LC.

The first one is S.H.C. from The Accüsed album More Fun Than an Open Casket Funeral

The other tune is Basia's More Fire than Flame from her sweetest illusion album (one of the best albums EVER!).

My fav bass ever. Not just wilser. But ever. Its one of a kind and still remains tasteful props to wil and bobby for having a great eye for style and form.

you are too kind ...way too kind.

It's a combination of being a pain in the behind to install with my experience in their failure rate. Of the 3 basses I owned with side mounted jacks, all of them failed (internally) and you can't fix them, unlike the open style jacks which can be easily "bent" back into place. Perhaps I'll offer the option of plate mounted side jacks, but at this point, it's face mounted or another builder. I told Bobby that I wanted the position of the jack to be one of those "my thing"-things. Right there below the bridge. Plus, it's easier to see when you're unsure if you're plugged in all the way.
