Custom vs. Stock?

Title may be misleading but what i mean is that i have this friend who is a Luther of sorts and i was gonna ask him to make a 6 string fretless with me. I just have to buy everything except the wood, the equipment needed for soldering and puting it together.

Alternatively i found these douglas 6 string fretlesses pretty cheap

I don't know what would be better to get. Any help with this?

If you're going "custom" just to get something different than off-the-rack, buy one of those basses from Rondo and take it to your "luthier" and have him make a new, distinctive body for it.

Everything will just bolt back onto the new body, so it will certainly work, and you'll have a "custom" bass for a really cheap price.

Ummmm......let's see.....custom one off bass built by a pro vs the cheapest bass I can find. Are you seriously asking this?

He's not a "pro" per say, something could go wrong you know. He knows what he's doing, but is it a risk i'm willing to take? lol and maybe i'll weigh my options with him so i know how much i'll be spending here

Get both LOL

Then i can mold them together like this:

The Douglas very inexpensive . If he is a good builder and has built guitars before a bass isn't much different generally speaking and should turn out good if he does good work. Hardware isn't very expensive and you can upgrade pretty easily. Play the Douglas wile yours is being built. You can sell the Douglas after its done or use it for parts. Build time for the custom will be a few months most likely at a minimum.

Or.... Buy the Douglas, send it out for a fret level and polish, and possibly upgrade the pups/ hardware/ electronics and have a great bass on the cheap.
