It is great to make new designs that make the instrument more playable. Still, I highly doubt anyone who is too lazy learn thumb position would have any interesting material to play in the upper register.
Thumb position is easy and is a more efficient system with far more options than the positions used in the lower register.
Trying to buy/build your way around learning to play the instrument is profoundly lazy. Even just to have a historical grasp on how the instrument developed. I have gotten 12 & 13 year olds playing up there in just a few lessons.
As a friend told me early on: "if music is too hard for you then you should just listen to music".
@james condino - that is a beautiful design, I would still use thumb position in the upper register.
