Cutting the headstock

So, since I first saw a tele, I've loved every single detail about it. The part that I loved most was the headstock.

I've never really liked the strat style headstocks, so I've decided to carve out a new one myself.

As you can see, I've already marked off the section of cutting. But, I'm wondering what I will need to do to make the cut section look like the rest of the neck (as far as finish goes). Will I just need to sand it down?

You'll need to sand it smooth enough to accept a finish, then try to match a new finish with the old. Do your cut and sanding of the edge first, then post a picture of the completed work and tell us what brand and model bass neck it is. Someone will tell you the best finish to use and how to match it tto the old.

It's just a Squier P (Affinity series).

I still have some more work to do with crafting it seeing as it's more rounded more than a telestock

with a scroll saw and a spindle sander. Downside is that you must refinish the entire neck if you really want it to match up where you removed material. I do lots of these in my shop.

I'm gonna see how the Polycrylic finish comes out.

I'm thinking about applying a lite purple to the body.

Note: The pickguard will cover most of the "problem areas" on the front of the body, so no worries.
