D Lakin Glaub anyone?

Anyone here own a D Lakin Glaub? How does it compare to a USA P? I know it's not USA made, I don't mind that but the price suggests it should be close to the USA models. Or would you compare it to an MIJ? MIM?Looking for opinions on both tone and build quality. I know about the advertising rules so please keep your opinions honest and unbiased, both good and bad points. thanks!

I actually would love to try one but I don't think I could get past the headstock. I defended it at one point but the more I look at it the more I dont like it. I think Dan is great and I hope this is successful but I just can't get behind the look of it. On top of that he has signature artists yet I have not seen one photo of either of them playing them. Bob Glaub still plays Laklands from what I can tell and Joe was apparently talking to Fender at one point about a signature bass.

I know a lot of people don't like the headstock, I still prefer it to many other Fender copies, they don't bother me at all. But yeah, interesting about the pros and their choices, I guess Glaub will probably choose to play a USA built bass over an Asian one.

I believe that any factory anywhere can produce a good product with the right people. This is a $1300 Korean bass which to me means that this bass if made in the USA at our wages would cost close to a US Lakland. The factory he is using is top notch and unlike the Skyline series that was made to meet a certain price point these are made to be a certain quality level and he priced them after he reached that quality. I don't think current Skylines are worth the price they ask at all but I would have no problem assuming that the Lakin series is worth every penny.

I just don't like the headstock. :)

Yeah the Friedland review is great of course. I was hoping for some more recent opinions from others who have been playing these for a while to see how they're holding up. I agree with the comment above about the quality, I think in this day and age a good factory made instrument can come from almost anywhere as long as they're using good quality parts and know what they're doing in terms of construction and qc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I know that Dan had secured the rights to Joe and Bob's names during the Lakland era, and I'm assuming that his ongoing use of them is a contractual matter, as opposed to Joe and Bob giving their person stamp of approval to the D. Lakin product line. Of course, that doesn't mean they're not great basses.
I played out for 10 years with a Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn. If Lakins are as good as those, they're very good indeed.

Ah, well I've never played one, so I can't help you much with that. Bass Central is the "exclusive" US source for them now, so either they are very good or they have a good profit % (BC is a very well respected retailer).

I agree with others about the headstock too though- doesn't do it for me.

Actually I think It the exact opposite, Dan has a great relationship with his endorsers

The initial endorser contract was with Dan and when Hanson bought Lakland their contracts did not come with it. That was when the model numbers changed from their name to a number. It appears that Bob and Joe signed a new contract with Dan and his new company. It does not appear that either of them own or play the model they put their name on.

I just played an import Glaub yesterday. My favorite part of it was the paint. The tone was a bit sterile for me and reminded me of Laklands in that regard. You can hear it in the video above. For a mass produced style import, probably one of the better options I have played though.

To each his own I suppose... I'm loving my D. Lakin USA Glaub ...... Suits me just fine ....8.4 lbs......1.5" nut ..perfectly smooth fret work. sustain for days... La Bella 760FL's ....SN # 001 .. I'm very happy ...
