Well, the DGCF thing worked for a long time, but eventually I started playing with a guitarist who tuned to Eb standard, and half the songs were drop C#. It got to be a pain in the butt. I was about to put a Hipshot X-Tender on my bass, when I lucked into trying a new 5-string P-bass (long story, but the bass gods clearly intended it to happen.) I bought it and haven't looked back.

I can't say I blame you for that.

Yeah, going between Eb, D, C# would still be an issue for me, even with a dedicated D-bass. But a careful grouping of songs on the set list would keep retunings of that one to breaks at least.

I.e. don't mix KISS and King's X in the same set.

Just tune DGCF and add a d-tuner on the D string.

What are your favorite Nickel plated round wound stings and gauges for DGCF? I'm thinking of switching from flats.

I often tune to DGCF. I do so with both flatwounds and roundwounds. Most of the time the basses concerned are strung with gauges 0.045, 0.065, 0.085 and 0.105.

An alternative tuning which I use as well is DGdg. Try it. It's fun!

Elixir stainless steel 105-45, they have quite good tension and brightness.

Yeah I bet that 105 balances well with the 45.

Actually I wouldn't mind going lighter with the F string, The main reason I started using D standard was because The strings were too tense in E, and the rest are as loose as I want them now but the .45 is still just a little too stiff.

I use a 50 fender flat for my F and it feels a little too loose to me.

I play mostly blues and blues inspired rock.

Well, just joined a band that uses the D standard with some drop C tunings. Just bought a hipshot to put on my p bass. Gonna be fun!!!!!

What do you guys do when the guitarists have their low E strings tuned down to C#? Do you tune down with them or just play it in the same octave as the guitars? I ask because I love playing in drop C# on my guitars but I can't tune that low on my bass without it being hard to keep the bottom string in tune.

I'd probably give into the darkness and play a 5 string . But I actually do tune Db standard when playing with a guitarist tuned down a 1/2 step to Eb standard. My "E" string is a .120 now and I have a .125 I want to try.

D Standard is when you tune DGCF. There is a secret handshake, but I can't show you if you don't already know it.
