D Standard Club (DGCF)

Have you thought of trying a high tension/stiff set of flats like Rotosound 77 jazz flats 5 iver set tuned down to ADGCF. The 130 tuned to A0 still has as much tension as a 145 plain vanilla nickel round wound tuned to A

Came back to mention that these strings absolutely brought my A string back to life. Rotos do sound different than the Dunlops but I am working through this. For now, it’s great to have all 5 strings available in this tuning. Thanks again @Prodigus Filius

I've gone ahead and installed the SIT Power Flats 45-105 on my Ibanez SR-650E for DGCF.

Just a quick update...

SIT Power Flats 45-105 have now been replaced with GHS Pressurewound 44-106 after 4 weeks. The PF worked well enough in terms of overall feel, ie comfortable without feeling too loose or floppy. But there was something about the .105D that left me not completely happy as it had a "wooly" quality to the tone with weird overtones higher up the neck. I did check for a possible twist, but no go. Besides, I decided the overall tonal character was a bit too dark for what I need.

Much happier with the PW as the tone is better balanced across all four strings with a better clarity and definition on the .106D. I think I'll stick with these for this particular bass.

Meanwhile, I'll be ordering a set of DR DDT 45-105 for one of my J's for DGCF. I've used this set in DGCF before and they worked great, so no worries there.

By the way, the black silk on the PW goes very well with the black hardware on the Ibanez...

I’ve only tried GHS pressurewounds once. On a Mikro when I got back into playing a bass. But I pulled em off real quick. Just didn’t dig em on the Mikro at least. However, I’m now thinking of giving the long scale M7200 set a go in DGCF tuning on a pbass for something different. All I need is a ‘just do it’ he he
 
What I have done is replace the 115 100 75 Roto88’s for GCF with the 100 75 and 65 respectively. The more even tension with the 135 as D sounds much better and I was missing string bending.

Here’s a rabbit. Never been a rounds guy due to how they feel. I hear the TI jazz rounds are the smoothest rounds out there. Any one tuned to DGCF with the following gauges and if how’d it go?

I think I have string bipolar he he, given all the wild flips from high tension to low tension try outs I get into. Currently in the low tension phase. Anyhow, I decided to find the average tension for for the 10 strings that make up the La Bella LTF flats 5 string set, and the TI Jazz Flats 5 string set. These are prob the most cited strings when discussions about low tension strings come up, are they not. Drumroll, the average tension is 33.82lbf. I’ll christen it the LTGM (low tension golden mean) .So I thought I would take that figure and see if there was a flatwound set ( no singles) with gauges that came close to the 33.82, but in D standard. Closest I found was GHS Precision Flats 45 60 80 105 set. With tensions thus in D standard

A set of light gauge (45-100) D'Addario Chromes is your answer! I had a set on one of my Ric 4003s for about 6 months before raising the tension to medium gauge. They were of similar tension to the sets you're trying out. They were great, but too light for D Standard.

Hmm. The 65 in ECB81 is pushing a bit high for what I’m mucking about with.
The 60 in ECB84 is more like it. It’s kind of academic for me, because I could do a custom Chrome set 45 60 75 105 that is more ball park for me LTGM wise. But I kinda looking at packaged sets only. I have the Chromes singles if I wanted to put em on

My string neurosis disorder has kicked into overdrive he he. I wanted to take low tension further and see at what point with the Trubass 88 gauges 65 75 100 115 tuned down to the point where I said to myself ‘Eureka!’ . So I closed my eyes and put on noise cancelling headphones to block out as much external sensory destractions. I was after ‘feel’ and not sound at that point So I first put the strings in E standard, and gradually tuned each string down till I had that pleasurable feeling of ‘Ahh!’’ I then checked the pitch of each string and then tuned them to the closest pitch. What I ended up with for the Trubass 88’s was a tuning of D1 F1 B1 D2. So I then established the tensions of the strings at DFBD and fed them into a vanilla string gauge determinator based on the tensions fed in and the desired pitches of DGCF tuning. Voila! The gauges suggested were
41 57 75 96. Coincidentally. given that I was already considering giving GHS pressurewounds a go but in a larger gauge, the GHS L7200 set not only has similar gauges (40 54 76 96) but also similar tensions per gauge. Now I’m well aware that tension and feel, though entwined, are not the same thing. String construction, bass neck etc factoring in. Anyhow, has anyone downtuned the L7200 set to DGCF? If so can you give some perceptions? Now pardonne! I have to put my straight jacket back on he he

This reminds me of the light gauge (50-105) La Bella White and Gold White tapes that I had on my basses almost 2 years ago. I like light gauge strings, but those were too light for me in D Standard. I was recording a bass track with the Gold Whites and when I isolated it, it was out of tune. That’s when I knew that I needed more tension and different strings. My tapes had rounds of similar gauges to yours under the nylon tape.

I don’t know about the tension of the GHS Pressurewounds. But they must be heavy strings in general to have warranted 41-96 gauge in D Standard.

GHS Pressurewounds are slightly stiffer than typical hex-core roundwound of similar gauges. I use the L7200 (40-96) in EADG and the M7200 (44-106) in DGCF. I can't imagine tuning down the 40-96 set to DGCF.

The GHS tensions for Pressurewound set L7200 in DGCF are low for sure. But that’s where I’m coming from ie how do folks find the tensions involved. Do they feel ok? The tensions are similar to the Trubass 88 65-115 set tuned to DFBD as a reference point
