D'Addario Chromes User Group- Chromeys Speak Out!

It's different feel to rounds as there's more surface under the fingers, but that's also the quality that takes the zing away I'd quess. I really like the clarity these offer. Of course there's less finger / fret / board noise, but it's also the tonal spectrum these have ( and I'm afraid I like them pretty fresh, given the price ), and the sustain, these have long note decay both on fretless and fretted. For me this is it, as much as I like thump I prefer to have options and versatility. For me, Chromes are the do-it-all flatwound string.

New to flats and I've began looking for a set I like best.

Bought two sets of Chromes (45 - 100) for my P-bass, and both sets had an E string where the wraps are separated at various spots along the string. The first set I noticed once installed, the second I could see it before installation:

Next I installed a set of Fender 9050 flats and those wraps were nice and tight... I liked the Chromes better, but I can not believe these gaps are normal; two sets in a row with the same 'problem'?

So, Chromes users-- whatcha think? This normal?

While playing I noticed something slightly odd under my fingers around the 5th fret, which made me take a closer look… and here we are. I’d probably just press on with it as I like the strings, but there is also a volume drop on the E. Making matters worse the fretted notes on the E string die out twice as quickly as the other strings.

Really just trying to find out if these E-string gaps are normal for Chromes… I had two consecutive sets with the same issue.

After more than 30th years of rounds i've bought 45-100 of these regular light gauge to put on my Yamaha TRBX.

I've made a good choice between flats? Are these more hard and tensioned respect D'Addarios exl 170 rounwound nickel (that are not light...)?

XL Nickel EXL170:

G 045 - 42.52 lbs.
D 065 - 48.35
A 080 - 40.05
E 100 - 34.72 (Total 165.64)

Chromes ECB81:

G 045 - 53.31 lbs.
D 065 - 58.63
A 080 - 47.52
E 100 - 40.29 (Total 199.75)

In terms of tension numbers, ECB80 is closer to EXL170.

G 040 - 37.83 lbs.
D 060 - 46.49
A 075 - 42.58
E 095 - 36.20 (Total 163.10)

You can always purchase online from good reputable international dealers. I'm in Indonesia. I got most of my strings from across the globe, buying online from US dealers like FretNation (formally Bass Strings Online), Strings by Mail, and eBay Bassspecialties, especially the strings that weren't available locally.

The .100 set feels a bit more light to my fingers, less stiffness than the .105 set. Fresh out of the package they are bright, looking forward to gigging them over the weekend. I hope they retain nearly as much fundamental as the .105 set. We’ll see.
