D'Addario new for 2013 thread!

So I see them on your site now, but are they out yet?

Unfortunately they do show a quantity on hand but they are not going to ship until the middle of January according to my rep... I am hoping they will release them sooner like they did with other new products that indicated a later ship date w/ on hand quantity so we will see!

Anyone who has ordered them I will be emailing shortly.

(I still hope they get released sooner than later though).

In the mean time one can always make up a set with XL or GHS Bass Boomer singles like I do  . If any of yous guys like balanced sets you might like a progressive tension set even better - I run 40/55/75/105 . Because the smaller strings dig into your fingertips more than the bigger ones a progressive tension set like this actually feels more balanced than a truly balanced set :) .

DOH! Well it gives me time to save up for a set, I guess ;)

I get 42/55/75/105 sets from Jason at BSO. Not sure if they are balanced tension, but they sure feel and sound good. These seem to be in between the light and medium sets he has. I just bought one of each gauge until I found the best sounding and feeling combination. This is definitely a timbre matched set at least. I can't stand for 1 string to be muddier than the rest.

Jason,

Whenever D'Addario releases the "Super Long" singles, can you add a filter (or a separate section) for building our own sets? The D'Addario singles section is pretty long as it is and will be even longer with many duplicate gauges in different scale lengths. Perhaps just grouping the list by scale length then gauge would suffice. I'm looking forward to trying D'Addarios for the first time!

Here are the 5 string gauge sets that I've worked out from their published PDF (a few others have already posted some of these combinations as well).
Note: The tensions listed are based on a 35" scale length, not the 34" scale from the PDF.

Heavy (42.7 lbs - 45.5lbs)
  • .145 (44.0 lbs)
  • .105 (42.7 lbs)[The .107 would be a great fit if it's coming in Super Long as well; it's not in the PDF yet]
  • .080 (44.5 lbs)
  • .060 (45.5 lbs)
  • .045 (45.4 lbs)

Medium (37.5 lbs - 40.3 lbs)
  • .135 (38.3 lbs)[Not currently available in Super Long but available in Long Scale; would need to be added to the catalog]
  • .100 (38.7 lbs)
  • .075 (40.3 lbs)[A .072 or so would be a great addition to balance things out]
  • .055 (37.5 lbs)[Not currently available in Super Long but available in Long Scale; would need to be added to the catalog]
  • .042 (39.3 lbs)

Light (35.1 lbs - 36.6 lbs)
  • .130 (36.6 lbs)
  • .095 (36.5 lbs)
  • .070 (35.8 lbs)
  • .052 (35.1 lbs) [Not currently available in Super Long but available in Long Scale; would need to be added to the catalog]
  • .040 (35.7 lbs)

I do hope they continue to expand the Super Long selection. The regular long scale is about .5" shy of clearing on my bass.

Thanks,

Matt

I can add a separate page.

I have been spot checking current singles in my inventory, looks like the new longer lengths are on hand! They are about 37.2" from ball end to taper!

If you are going to purchase singles and need the longer length let me know and I will double check they are the long ones as there is no indication on the packaging.

The new balanced set final version samples I have are in this longer length as well.

I thought I'd just worked out a well-balanced ProSteel set of singles, using the figures on Daddario's tension chart (.040, 0.055, 0.075, 0.100, 0.135)... until I saw the 0.055 and 0.075 weren't available as singles. :(

Here's hoping that there are more singles available soon, as it wouldn't be possible to make a balanced set based of .105 either.

Excellent!:hyper:

I have a set of Hi-Beams on the way, but if

  • .135
  • .100
  • .075
  • .055
  • .042
Or...
  • .130
  • .095
  • .070
  • .052
  • .040

are available with the new 37.2" length, I would order those as well and try them before I put the Hi-Beams on. Order BASS-8074 is showing as processing so if everything works out, perhaps the sets could ship together.

Are you wanting XL Nickels or Pro-Steels? I just measured all of my XL Nickel's in inventory... all except the .110's are 37.2"... I imagine the .110's will be soon if not already when I order more.

If you need prosteels I can check those too...

That is good news. I have two 105 singles on the way from BSO. A twin pack of XL165 I got from you a few weeks ago were extra long. My tech strung them through body despite my misgivings and they were a perfect fit.

I had to replace an E string using an old stock set from the GC and sure enough it was too short to string through body on a Lakland JO4.

Good to know! I was not sure if any of the sealed sets have the longer windings, guess they do already!

Just ordered the medium (45-107) set from BSO. I hope they get here soon because I'm hating these Elixirs on my new Ibby.

We have a bunch of these on order so the day these come in they will be shipping out to you. Expected release is the 15th, but we hope they ship them sooner!

The description of the EXL160BT 53 lb. heavy set (.050 .067 .090 .120) says it advises that set to be used in D-Standard or lower. So what is the heaviest gauge balanced set for E-Standard?

I realize these balanced sets are new so I don't expect their website to be updated with up to the minute details, but I'd like to see a set with the E tension right above or below 50 lbs., perhaps something like .050 .065 .085 .115, or at least a .115 single so I could put my own set together.

Any word if a .115 will be made available? My goal is to put together a set with the E,A,& G tension matching that of a typical .065 D.

I've checked D'Addario's website occasionally for the past few years but their E singles jump from .110 to .120 and I thought a .120 might be too much.

You can use the EXL160BT .050 .067 .090 .120 at E standard but it is going to be a pretty high tension set. I played this set on both a P-Bass and as part of a Balanced Tension 6 string Set B-C and it is really fun to play. Very solid feel at E standard I felt like a total rocker!
