All you flat wound players had me so curious that I had to try. Recommended by the sales guy at GC I decided on the D'Addario XL Chromes for my MIM Jazz. He said it was a great choice since they still retain some good tonal character and can be quite bright with a little EQ. I must say it took a while to get used to them. My fingers tend to stick if they are a little damp but not bad. The tone is awesome. Fat and clean just how I like it. I'm still going to keep round wounds on my other basses but these are a welcome change and something new to add to my arsenal.

I am happy with the Chromes 100-40 for,IMO, a more versatile sound than other flats. Tension is pretty good maybe a hair on the tight side. Chromes might not be the choice for the classic sound, I call it dead sounding. if I need it I just use a little foam. The heavier gages really sound good if you can handle them. But they are very stiff. Probably great with a pick
