DAE: Use a quarter instead of a pick?

V-Picks work decently if you like a thicker pick.

I like it when the strings give a thump sound. I sounds great in my opinion. Any picks that give out that sound?

Does it have to be a pick? I'd go fingers on flats for classic thump.

Some times Im going to need a pick for things. (i.e. My band's songs) Using a pick sounds somewhat different than using fingers. I want a sound like that, but still keeps the thump.

Then a 'Carol Kaye approach' might be just the ticket!

Get a thick pick - a fairly rigid and comfortable pick.
play over the neck/body join or towards the mid pickup position (where a P pickup would be). Use flats (or rounds with the tone rolled down).

Cut some treble, add a foam mute to taste and.... voila! THUMP THUMP THUMP. At least that's one fun way to get a deep forceful tone IME...

I just tried out all my picks last night and it's always interesting to hear how different they sound. Of all of them, I liked the copper pick sound best. It's a unique and tasty sound. I do wish I had some of the other picks to try out, though, like the V-Picks and that, what was it, control master or something. I'm sure they'd sound different.

But my favorite is still fingerstyle -- much more control of the string and more variation in the sounds I can make.

Inspired by Brian May, I've used sixpences. They are are a little smaller and thinner than the quarter, which makes them easier to use IMO. It's been a few years since I bought them, but I got about 50 of them on eBay for, I believe, $15.
