I recently came up on a few odd ball items that were being tossed out by a bar down the street. A buddy was walking his dog and shot me a message so I cruised over and brought it all home.
Everything was covered in a thick layer of what can only be described as mummy dust. I plugged everything in an it all worked so I decided to clean it up. Much to my surprise all of it was in great cosmetic condition under the grime.
In amongst the haul was a Crate Palamino 30 watt class-A combo, all point to point wired. It was pretty crackly and the signal was intermittent but after tearing it apart, scrubbing it down, and blasting it with contact cleaner and compressed air it came back to life...and sounds great!
There was also a Morley Bad Horsie II wah and a Danelectro Fabtone.
I'm incredibly happy with the Crate. I'd never heard of this amp and probably wouldn't have paid it any attention but after doing some research a lot of people seem to really like this amp and hold it high enough regards. Either way, I definitely have a use for it and happen to like it.
I'm pretty ambivalent about the wah, but the Fabtone really got my attention.
The Fabtone is no doubt a strange bird. The controls are volume, bass, treble...and 'fab' with a fixed gain set somewhere between 10 and infinity. The fab seems to adjust the distortions texture but something else seems to be happening to the EQ, I just cant tell what exactly. The EQ section is really powerful. There is far too much treble on tap. Even with it rolled all the way down its still bright enough. There is also a massive amount of low end.
I know I've come across this pedal a number of times when I was a teenager and like most, probably didn't think much of it, and probably even turned my nose up at it. I'm honestly a bit surprised this hasn't been someones secret weapon, like Corgains op amp Muff or Electric Wizards FZ-2.
This is without a doubt a very high gain drive pedal. With some tweaking I think there are some really cool, really aggressive tones to be had. Does anyone have any experience with these or know much about how people used them?
