In my opinion, there is a difference, though my tendency is to call the wooden saddle's tone "woodier", which may betray the possibility that it's all in my head.

But, realistically, maybe one could attribute more of a tone difference to different kinds of strings?

One of my main gig basses is a Silvertone Model 1444 by Danelectro I put back into playing condition about 2 years ago. It originally had a stick bridge but I changed it to the Pro bridge with adjustable metal saddles. The stick saddle lacks some of the extreme highs of the metal saddles but they both sound like a Dano with the Pro being better intonated.

Couldn't say. It's the first - and only - Longhorn I've ever played. But it has one helluva thump.

The wood bridge is sufficient at best as it is the most simple/basic design it could be. I went one step further on my Dano/Coral Deluxe Bass by making my own wood bridge with brass saddles. (from a Hipshot KA bridge) Vintage Dano's are mid-centric in sound so a wood bridge helps make it a bit less so, but the brass saddles help intonation and preserve the mids, which I prefer. I bring the 'bass' in on my amp.

I've never seen this mod. Pretty cool. I could see also using fretwire ala Hofner...
