Danelectro Owners Club

I've owned several Dano's over the years, in fact it was a 2002 Longhorn that got me interested in short scale basses. Here is my '99 Longhorn which is my main bass at the moment.

My '63 Dano short scale makes an appearance in this video. Yes, I realize I refer to it as a "cheap Chinese bass" but the video was made for a my nieces who are non-musicians... and realistically it is a cheap Chinese bass. :smug: It just happens to sound flippin' amazing! I love the way this baby records with a little overdrive. Pure rock tone.

Is the E string different from the others or is it the lighting?

Looks to me like the E string is different. Even has different wrap color which looks like that found on Chromes. The others look like they might be Rotosound nylon tapes.

I was wondering when someone would notice.

Mongo2, you are right, The E string is a Chrome. When I first tried the Rotosound 88s on a Longhorn about 15 years ago, I really liked the ADG but the E string didn’t do it for me. One day, just by chance, I decided to put a Chrome E string on just as an experiment, and it sounded great, or least to my ears it does. It’s like a set of acoustic strings where the construction of the strings may vary across the set, and but their timbres remain complementary. I wasn’t thinking that at the time I tried this out - it was just a fluke.

I’ve tried the same combination on other Dani’s, (a Hodad) and and some Fender Short Scales, and it sounds Ok, but not as good as on the two longhorns.

As a result I became really interested in strings and am constantly experimenting. It adds a whole new layer to GAS. Now when NBD happens, it is followed by hours cycling through my string collection until I find the “right” set of strings for the instrument. Recently I rented a bass and spent a couple of weeks trying strings before I bought it.

I have a Longhorn from the original batch of re-issues , so it was probably made in 98 . Still have the factory strings on it . I felt it kept sounding better as the strings aged , and never changed them . I do have a set of LaBella Dano flats ready for that day when one breaks but I'm going to hold off until that day comes .

I had 2 longhorns when I bought this one, and this one came with LaBellas. I played those strings for a long time and they sounded great. I have a set of LaBellas in my string collection, I really like them but I’m sticking to my Roto-Chromes.

I was ordering some Curt Mangans for my long scale basses so I thought I would try their short scale for my longhorn. They almost fit without modification. You could get away with it if you don't mind more than the typical amount of wraps around the tuning key. They're probably better suited for 32" short scale. Soundwise, they're very close to the stock strings.

I never did get an answer on what the current stock strings are. I understand that they are D'Addarios so I'm guessing if they are steel or 105s then they are Prosteels EPS170S otherwise they're the Nickel EXL170S.

As far as I've read, they're EXL170S, although the ones that came on my 56 (2010 or '11) seemed like stainless. (I took them off immediately and put flats in, so it didn't really matter.)

But I do like EXL170(S) when I use rounds.

I was going to go straight for flats but the Danos ended up being more versatile then I expected so I kept rounds on the longhorn. The DC got the chromes.

I bought my Long Horn new in '68 and have used rounds ever since. I finally sold it in 2012. I made a huge mistake back in the early '70s, I installed a Jazz Bass pickup in the neck position. Worked fine, but, ruined the value as I had to cut out the body to fit it. Also, I didn't like the flipper on and off switches as in the middle of the song, I found myself with no sound coming out. I wired it to have one volumn and one tone, both pickups on all the time.

Here's my oddball. Seems like someone slapped a bass neck/bridge on a Pro reissue guitar body.

Very nice.

10 years ago I converted a U3 RI guitar body to bass with a shortscale bass neck and stick bass bridge. I gave it to a friend of my son who wanted to learn bass. I also converted a U2 RI guitar body and Convertible RI body at the same time. I still have them.

I still want a Pro RI body to convert.

I was thinking the necks/bridges were pretty much universal, but never pulled the trigger on a couple of them to make my own mutants. Then this popped up and ticked off all the right boxes, I was wanting to get a Dano or lipstick PU bass for a while. It's full scale too, neck dives, but not really that bad (I know because I have an EGC neck on a Thunderbird).

Had to fix some bad QA on the sloppily installed nut. Then one of the Chromes that were on it snapped while putting it back on. I had another set of flats that I don't know the brand - dark purple silk, La Bella, or TI...? They are dead and lifeless sounding when compared to the Chromes and Fender 9050's. The Chromes and Fender strings make me like flatwounds again.

Here's my oddball. Seems like someone slapped a bass neck/bridge on a Pro reissue guitar body, but penally a factory second.

(Note the paint discoloration. It looks like it was stored in a stack of bodies inter a DC body, maybe in bright got sunlight for several years. I was originally going to repaint it, but i decided not to mess with it.)

I did this. I've never seen another until now. I had to cut the neck pocket deeper because I didn't want to move the bridge. I think the neck I used is from nineties longhorn. The body was NOS.
