Some people add a third screw in the middle of the front of the plate. I've never done that myself, but some have done it.

My solution is to replace the bridge with a better Jerry Jones bridge. No bending ever.

That's what I did. Straightened the piece of zinc bridge, drilled a hole in the middle toward the front of the bridge. Reassembled, then used the hole to mark a spot on the body, took it apart, drilled a hole in the body
added a wood screw then reassembled. Set it up, brought the wood screw up so it touches the bottom of the bridge for support and voila, all's good! My Granddaughter is still rocking it! Its a Korean Blackburst standard model I got for 200.00 from GC used. I didn't like the all metal bridge on a Jerry Jones Longhorn I had, it felt and played different, so I wanted to stick with the rosewood.

Yeah, they sure can be pieces of zinc ;).

I'm not sure if they are all zinc or some type of soft bronze alloy, but you can literally bend them with your hand they are so soft! Some of the chrome came off mine and it sure looked like zinc to me! Whatever it is they shouldn't be making bridges out of it! My Jerry Jones had the same design of rosewood bridge, but it was
made of steel and never going to bend!

It's just "white metal" which would have a lot of zinc in it - but isn't even THAT (which would mean they went out of their way to get something pure) - it's just a super cheap "alloy" of whatever metal is at hand at the time with lots of zinc, and recycled (meaning just melted down) aluminum along with traces of tin, steel, etc from whatever trash they melted to get it. It's the same stuff they used to make Hot Wheels out of - hence they were "die cast" rather than "pure steel" it SOUNDS like something - but really only means they were made in a mold.
It was just commenting on the way you said "pieces of zinc" as though zinc was a euphemism for another word that often gets used in the phrase "pieces of..."
And completely agree - they should NOT be making bridges out of that stuff - especially ones that must support the pressure of strings all by themselves (normal bridges naturally get some help from the wood they're resting on) and which have a HOLE through half of the centre line. My one big gripe with the modern era Danos.

G'day, I recently picked a Longhorn it currently strung with trimmed longscale rounds.

I'm about to order some new strings online and I'd like recommendations for both flatwounds & roundwounds to can try out.

What strings is everyone using?
Chromes are raised a lot. Are these ECB81S? Also La Bella's 760FD's.
I liked GHS Pressurewounds, nice and smooth on the fingers. Anyone using these? do they fit thru the tuning peg?

Also, how many wraps around the tuning peg do you recommend, the strings that came on it are wrapped around 4 times!

cheers

FWIW I'm using GHS Bass Boomers (round wounds) short scale on mine. Not sure they're the absolute ideal string for this bass but I like the sound I'm getting from them, I'm not a flat wound fan personally. Fit thru the tuners no problem. I take at least 3 wraps around the posts on all my basses regardless.

Thanks for the reply, that's what its all about, if it works for you & you like the sound, go for it!
Finding shortscale strings in Australia is about as rare as 'rocking horse poop!'.....so I'm going to order from the States.
My E string is a longscale, i think there's 5 wraps (at least) around the peg, it really needs the shorties.
cheers

Check out www.bassstringsonline.com. The owner is a regular on this forum, I'm told if you mention that you're a TB member he cuts you some slack on pricing or some such. Haven't asked myself, only ordered from him once so far (I don't need to change strings too often) and wasn't aware at the time. Real broad selection of short scale strings in all kinds of different brands.

My JJ Neptune Longhorn has a modern adjustable bridge with individual metal saddles. The JJ bridges I've gotten for my Danelectros are the popsicle stick ones.

Strings:

When I used roundwounds, I used D'Addario EXL170S. I liked them. Those are what came on my Jerry Jones Longhorn.

Now I use D'Addario Chrome flats, ECB81S.

I've also used Rotosound flats. I preferred the Chrome flats.

That's the extent of my experimentation.

Hey guys, I've just picked up a Seafoam Green Longhorn bass and wondering if or where I can get a White Pearloid Pickguard. I couldn't find any on eBay.

Any suggestions?

I got mine on ebay from a seller named aiguitars, but as you saw there isn't anything available right now. As it happens, I found an old email from the seller in my inbox and Googled the address. He has a website (earlier in the thread) so it might be worth contacting him and see if he still makes them. I really like mine - you can see the photos earlier in the thread.

You could also contact a place that does custom pickguards. I used Pickguardian to make one for my Squier CV 50's P-bass. You send them your old pickguard and they use it as a template to make a new one. A little pricey but great quality.

I'm looking for details about my Longhorn, there's no markings regarding country of origin etc other than a sticker in the cavity with the following number, which I assume is a serial number.
'9811552168'
Any clues from this to its origin or year.
cheers

Could you post a picture ? You mentioned it was sea foam so it might be one from the first batch of re-issues . They had two stacked knobs , the wooden bridge , and were Korean made . They started making them in 98 . They also did a Pro run with better tuners and an adjustable bridge . There was a later batch that had a pastel blue that were Chinese made and had two knobs and a toggle switch with an adjustable bridge . The more recent Chinese and Korean models have the truss rod adjustment on the headstock and were only available in limited finishes .
