Calling all Danoclubsters.

Got a line on a black sparkle Danoblaster bass (the vaguely Mosrite looking model with onboard chorus.)

Supposedly fine condition, no case. Under 2 bills.

Dealio?

EDIT: I presume this is the Rumor model.
That's about right for one they were 189 new. They are, other than the cool retro look, simply a low end p bass with a chorus dropped in.

For me, it's a must have, for you, you have to decide.

Yep, a Rumor. They feel cheap as hell but sound great. Mine is blue sparkle.

On a bittersweet note, I must reluctantly start to thin the herd. Will soon be listing my circa 1967 Silvertone 1443 with OHSC. It’s a nice one. Watch the TB classifieds!

I sort of accidentally bought a LongHorn this morning. Put in a offer yesterday afternoon before realizing I could have bought the same one new from Musician's Friend for $7 less than my offer.
At least the one I bought will come with a gig bag.

Judging from the machine-heads alone, I'd say this is likely the Chinese reissue & not the better-made Korean version.

Sort of wish I'd spent the extra $100 to get the MIK model with better machine-heads.

Sam Ash had one this past weekend, but since it had tapewounds on it, I had no idea how it would sound with roundwounds.
By the time I decided I wanted to buy it, Tuesday afternoon, it had sold.

At least I was able to determine that the lower horn won't get in my way while playing in a chair, which was my main reason for never considering one. Well, that & the rosewood bridge, which I found off-putting.
However, I did not test it on a strap to make sure it wouldn't neck dive.

This whole thing will be an experiment for me, since I've also never owned a short-scale.
Justification for paying a little more came in the form of knowing I'll get this one long before Musician's Friend would have delivered. They're backlogged for this finish until the middle of next month.
Downside is it's not returnable, which would have been a great benefit from ordering from Guitar Center, who most likely would have dropped their price to match M.F..

Pickups-Wise, how do the Chinese reissues compare to the Korean ones?
It would appear all the hardware is different between the two.

The whole system is very lightweight, including those tiny tuners, so I never found balance an issue with a Dano, or maybe it's just too light to be troublesome. Having owned or played US original, chinese and korean Danos, I can say that, at least to my ears, there's not a lot of difference among the lipstick pickups. Interested in hearing if others agree.

I've never seen the newer ones. I have a Korean one. As far as the bridge goes, that and the aluminum nut are part of the sound. That and the Lipsticks. A longhorn fits very nicely in a vintage standard Strat case. Perfect fit. In spite of all the basses I own , I use my Longhorn for most of the recording I do. It's a great bass. I'll never part with it.

Yeah, pretty sure that's a new Korean one. I have one - a lefty. As far as pickups go; the original Korean Danos (pre-Chinese) reverse-engineered original vintage Dano pickups. They're supposedly clones of the originals. the new MIK pick ups are supposed to be wound slightly hotter than the originals; I couldn't say one way or the other. The aluminum nut? Like the old Aluminum necked Kramers; it's just their thing. The bridge can be a little fiddly, 'cause it's not exactly 21st Century cutting edge, but it works well enough. You can get an adjustable "pro" bridge for it from Allparts if it annoys you. Both my DC59 Pro Danos have them... I like my Longhorn a lot; and my '90s MIK DC59s have the nicest necks of any of my basses. I like them a lot, too. If you ever decide you want a hard case for your Longhorn? An Epiphone 335 guitar case will fit like a glove...

Picked up the LongHorn at 14:30, sold it at 16:30.

neck dive - check
difficult to find strings for - check
cheapest controls I've EVER seen/felt - check

The one I tried at Sam Ash felt much more solid at the controls & could have sworn the one at Sam Ash had the volume on the chicken-head knobs.
This one had the volume on the round part of the knobs & treble cut was on the chicken-head part of the knob.

FWIW, the D'Addario strings made specifically for the Ibanez Mikro basses do not fit.
They're about 3/8" too short & start tapering before the nut.

Well, FWIW, a Longhorn is a standard Short Scale bass. So, no, of course strings for a Mikro bass won't fit; any normal short scale string set will, though. But, if you don't like it, you don't like it. FWIW, though, the people who think a Longhorn neck dives (I'm not one of them, by the way) usually just move the front strap button out to the end of the upper horn. Plenty strong enough, and seems to work quite well. And on all 3 of mine, so do the controls. Don't be scared of the knobs; they're just plastic; they won't hurt you...
