Danelectro shorthorn, longhorn, short scale, long scale

I have a big big mess in my head.

What's the difference between shorthorn and longhorn in a Danelectro? Is it the same that short scale (21 frets) and long scale (24 frets)?!

Most Danelectro basses are short-scale basses, meaning somewhere around the 30" to 32" mark, but I think they pretty much stick to 30".

The only exception I am aware of is the '63 Danelectro, which came in both short and long scale (34"). I have a long scale version and love it.

In case you weren't sure, scale is the measurement from nut to saddles.

The "longhorn" and "shorthorn" are just body styles.

Are you sure the 63 Danelectro long scale is only 34 inches? I have one and I always thought it was longer than 34 inches but I never measured it. It feels like the neck is a mile longer than a P-bass neck.

As far as the long scale goes, it is 34" IIRC.

Yeah, the body is a little on the small side, so you get the impression of a longer neck. But 34" it is.

Or maybe it's the whole psychological effect of holding a Danelectro in your hands and having to reach that far.

The '63 Pro Longscale plays like a much more solid bass than it's shortscale brothers. The tone is to die for. I can actually slap on this thing.

I bought one of the '63 Dano long scale basses on MF a couple years back on clearance. Best $200 I ever spent. I'd love to get a Long Horn. Reminds me of the Traveling Wilburys "End of the Line" video.

When people use the term "shorthorn" I think of the Dano DC.
