Danelectros and Straploks

The Jerry Jones I use the most came with (Schaller?) straplocks. I use a soft 2" leather strap and it works great. On the other one I use a different strap with soft ends and it also works well with the stock buttons.

The only other thing I can think of would be moving the strap button to the back. I've seen this on old fenders. Replace the neck bolt on the upper corner with one slightly longer and install the button there.

Also, if the you end up really liking the Dano thing, try a Jerry Jones sometime. They are really great basses.

ya, just saw on the jerry jones website that he actually installs the strap button on the horn. uses a lot better tuner and bridge, too. only thing i didn't like is the price...$1200! phew!

Danos galore. i like my herd very much. take them for what they are. love them last set when everything feels heavy.....Most of these are korean 90's models.

my favorite one with strap lock moved to neck plate.... Actually sounds really good. silver sparkle not showing too good. long scale

Probably the best of the herd - hodad model with three pups. little noisy but manageable. blue sparkle. long scale

forgot what this is called but has a built in chorus effect. worst of my litter...

only chinese built one - 63. sounds pretty good. so far, fingers crossed, none of the issues that others have had.

they all sound great with my older tube heads, and my 2 ampeg ss with the VT dlx. i avoid these with my newer type stuff - trace, yamaha etc...

Yes, Tim Marks and JimmyM, when you order a JJ with straplocks its the Schallers because of the original button position, which he kept true to the original Dano Longhorn design of behind the neck, can only accomodate those particular type of straplocks.

The JJ Longhorn Dano's originally came with Dano style bridges and regular strap buttons behind the neck. Jerry moved the strap button to the horn because of the better access for the strap and because it has been very common for players of Dano's over the decades to install a strap button there. So made sense to him as well as putting the vintage style bridge on it for better intonation.

Yes Jimmy, the price is not in the Danelectro range, but you get an instrument that is definitely $1200 quality and improvements as you can see.

I love my JJ's.

jumbod, great collection! danos are the coolest! that little sparkle job might be in my future but i think i want it in short.

tom, i totally dig the jerry jones concept. but dang, this is a lot of bass for $200.

In the meantime I'll use this excuse to show off my Jerry Jones. It is a bit of a strange concept in that its a high end knock-off of a cheap bass.

I bought my JJ Longhorn new for ~$750 at a local shop about 3 years ago. Had a set of chromes installed as part of the deal.

I love the tone, weight, and playability of this bass. It really nails the vintage sound for the 50s/60s tunes we do in my primary band. Definitely a thump machine.

As mentioned previously they come with the strap button on the upper horn.

beautiful bass, otis! much better deal than $1200 what kind of bridge is that on there? i believe he uses gotoh, but all i can find are standard spacing gotoh bridges at parts websites.

Looks familiar OtisRocks. I have a copperburst Jerry Jones Longhorn too (see photo). Note, mine has the wood bridge. I installed Dunlop straplocks behind the neck with no problem (I think you can see it). I had Schaller straplocks on it originally and they were a pain to take on and off, so I switched to Dunlops. I was worried they might not fit, but they did.

There are no maker's marks on the bridge but the tuners are Gotoh so the bridge probably is too. It has standard 19mm string spacing and slots to keep the saddles from moving. The bridge sits in a very shallow rout such that the plate is flush with the top of the bass.

For those with the wooden bridge, how do you adjust the string height? Is setting the intonation difficult? Just curious as I am considering adding a Dano short horn to my collection.

sorry to bump an old thread but i finally figured out this bridge! string height i already knew...you do it with the two outer screws. but i just discovered that the wooden saddle is held on with a screw on the bottom, and the screw is in a slot so there's room to move it around a little. i adjust it to where the G and E are in tune and hope that the rest of the strings get close.

i decided i couldnt take the wooden bridge anymore so i put a better adjustable one on.
pic is of a righty turned left handed.
I got rid of the chicken head knobs as well, they were too easily
turned.
The jazz knobs also look better IMO
And new machine heads.
