The title pretty much explains what im looking for really;
Dark, sombre, macbre pieces driven by the bass (double bass) or a strong prominent bass line.

Check out Hector Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique.
The fourth movement "Marche au supplice" (March to the Scaffold) has a very famous theme that starts in the basses/cellos.

Well, it's hard to top Carl Nielson's Symphony No. 4 "The Inextinguishable," for awesome bass parts including a 32nd note section that ends with a run from the B above the octave G down to the open E.

Plus, there is a two tympanist drum battle near the end!

Guaranteed to bring the audience to their feet.
