Dark country about hardship... but modern

Townes Van Zandt is very much the man for this kind of song, but stubbornly trying to find things that are more modern... Treaty Oak Revival are kind of a party band with a fairly rock sound, but a lot of their material is about the downsides of partying too much.
And this was uploaded yesterday.
I'll try to keep away from country rap in this thread, but Clever's a rapper who turned into a country singer, and many of his songs would fit this thread. Having said that, feel free to hate this song and everything about it, haha. It is very modern and sentimental.
And, OK, 90s song, but how about a song about "just some sorry kids" who picked the worst possible day for cattle rustling?

I have my opinions on Blaze, he makes great music but its a challenge to separate art from artist. I heard some from people who knew him he would get super drunk and bully people for their traits, being tall, short, fat, skinny you name it and tried to start fights whenever he can. People defend it by saying he wasn't mentally there and had a rough life. Not my place to say but his music I enjoy... I enjoy this very modern darkness to country this song has a certain feeling to it I can't explain.
Yes! I've been a long time fan of his. Almost 20 years ago I unexpectedly saw him perform in a dimly-lit little underground (literally) venue in Buffalo. I was there to see the band VietNam and didn't know they had an opener touring with them... just some guy named Greg, with a classical guitar. Totally killed it.
Slim Cessna, Drive By Truckers... yeah, classics of the past few decades for this kind of music.
Also this dropped since the thread was started... indie, but acoustic enough to sound country, and blends the classic theme of a no-good outlaw whose plan to flee to Mexico goes all wrong, and some elements of a murder ballad. Don't let the smile fool you! She's a killer!
