Darkglass vs High Output Basses

I wouldn't say "problem" but it is a subjective taste issue. If the guy from Cannibal Corpse thinks that feeding a lower gain signal gets him the tone he's after, then who am I to argue. My experience with the VMT Deluxe and a passive P lines up with that though; lower gain gets me a more musical sound for my purposes.

I haven't had any issues with 18v or 9v basses. And some of my basses have a pretty high output.

Maybe try lowering your pickups slightly. How close are they to the strings?

Also you don't want to preamp stack. If you have an active bass going into a B7k and then into a bass amp you're effectively using 3 preamps!

I set the onboard bass EQ to near flat, the actual amp EQ to flat (or bypass it altogether) and then use the EQ on the B7k for most the of tone shaping.

I run a Smith into my B7K and VMT with 18v pre amp and it has no issues, previous posters have mentioned the possibility of an internal trim pot on your bass, winding that back a bit could solve some issues, one possible solution

It is more about impedance matching than 9V vs 18V. Aguilar OBP3, which is used on some USA Spectors has 100 Ohm output impedance. You can plug it into a mixer's line in socket and it will do great. That is why it overloads most pedals as most of them are designed to handle instrument output impedance, which is of a quite different value.

I have such Spector and it was driving (no pun intended) me crazy. I had to read up on that. In fact, if you do it as Alex Webster, it opens up nice subtle textures in most dirt pedals. It gives much more space where dirt settings sound nice because signal is not already too 'hot' for a pedal.
