Darkstar on an SX bass

This is a very amateur question, but it's got me thinking. Could I replace the neck pups with a Dark Star on either of these basses? If so, how complicated would it be besides getting a pickguard that could fit it? Link Removed or this one Link Removed

Anyone have any ideas for an SX project?

I had the same "dilema" with my Squire Bronco that I bought new at GC for $150.

I wanted to upgrade the pup with a $65 Seymour Duncan, but to do so I would have had to widen the pup hole in the pickguard which I was not willing to do. Also, I was loath to spend a bunch of money on a $150 bass.

What I did was:
> change the stock P Bass knobs for J Bass knobs - $12
> put on an ashtrray - $18
> Had a friend hand paint the horse head - free

I would probably change the strings if I could decide on what to get.

I could also change the bridge for like a Fender Vintage, but don't want to spend the $35 - $40.

Here's some pix

Darkstars are like $200 bucks, no? If you're willing to spend that much on upgraded pups, why not sell both of the SXs and spend $350 on a used Fender MIM P or J or a used MIJ Fender Aerodyne or Mustang?

... that all could benefit from a pickup upgrade as well. ;)

If your objective is to mod, why start with a more expensive version, that for all useful purposes, is pretty much the same?

definitely buy the pickup start a parts box and you'd be surprised.
after a few years of part saving I've finished a 5 string, am throwing together a P bass, and helping a buddy build a guitar. Besides you could always put in the pickup and "Graduate" it to a better bass later.

+1

Nooo!!!! *shakes fist in air* I just talked to the guy who had it, and about 20 minutes ago he sold it!

Ya snooze... ya loose. I learned that from experience a long time ago.
Also, always jump on bargains even if you don't need it. Eventually you will need it and then it'll be hard to find or be expensive.
