Dave Pushic 6 String Bass, any thoughts...

I just stumbled onto a very nice looking 6 string bass with neck thru design made by Dave Pushic whom I never heard of before. The bass looks very nice but looks are only one aspect obviously. I went on Dave's website and it looks like his prices are VERY low for what looks like a high end bass. The 6 string neck thru's start at $1000 and even with all the bells and whistles it would be hard to get the new cost over $2000. What am I missing here..?

I'm not one to knock anyone. I too have contacted DP Custom Guitars. I think you have answered your own question. I would contact Chris Stambaugh

I think you have answered your own question.

What the...???

Two friends of mine have ordered custom basses from Dave Pushic's shop. One of those basses is a doubleneck fretted/fretless. The quality of workmanship was excellent, and they all play and sound great. I'm not in the market for a new bass, but if I were, I wouldn't hesitate to order one from him.

i've heard his work is improving, but in his early days of building there were some pretty bad pieces that were coming out of his shop. Do a search on him on TB and you might turn up some flame threads.

I remember for many years there was a 6 string DP bass that was being passed around TB, then made it to an ATL GC where it sat for a a couple years, just to be tossed back and forth between another GC in GA.

How would you compare one of Dave's better builds to say a Ken Smith BSR6 which is what I'm really close to buying but this bass caught my attention mainly because of the price.

I have a Smith BT-Custom 4, and have played a BT-Custom 6 owned by - interestingly enough - the same friend who had that DP doubleneck. Smith basses have much thinner necks and are slimmer and lighter than the DP basses I've played. The Smith is a more sophisticated instrument overall, and better sounding. But the price difference... good Lord. You can get a DP bass with all the bells and whistles for 1/4 the price of a Smith.

If you can afford a Smith, go for it. But for the price of a Smith you can buy a very nice DP custom bass and a decent used car.

I found some photos my friend sent me of his doubleneck he received this last August. I don't think he'd mind if I posted them...

A friend of mine here on TB has a 4 string Pushic that he regularly plays out. (I met him because he plays in my buddy's band). I've tried it out a few times at their shows and the build quality is really good! I dont know exactly how old it is but I know my friend Jim swears by his work.

I had Dave build me a bass in 2005 and I can't say enough about it. Just be sure you know what you want and check in with Dave...Hopefully you will get the bass of your dreams.

:eek:WOW:eek:

These look really nice.... I'm surprised I've never heard of them until now.... wish he had better pictures on his website.... Looks like he still has some fine-tuning to do on some of his body styles.... but those Singlecuts look fabulous!

Pushic's quality seems to swing from one extreme to the other- mostly with the older basses being in the bad category (just met someone this weekend who had a Pushic with an extreme finish issue). It would be interesting to see one of his newer basses in person.

I agree Bryan, I'd love to see some of the newer stuff, too. Always liked the design concepts ....

+1. The OP really needs to try a Pushic before buying. I've read enough horror stories to be scared off for good. There are people who are very happy with their Pushics but let's face it, not everyone has the same standards when judging workmanship. In this thread for instance: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/dp-custom-boutique-bass-recent-buyer-update-499761/

I noticed some construction flaws and others commented on flaws with the finish. The owner of the bass wasn't concerned but if this sort of thing bothers you, look elsewhere. Then there are the REAL horror stories...

A DP may be priced low but if you're not happy with it $1000 is alot of money.
