David Lee Roth

Sammy Hagar is a great vocalist.

Diamond Dave is a great singer.

HUGE difference there. Vocalists can hit any note you want them to, perfectly to pitch, great sustain. Singers can work that note for all it's worth and make you throw the horns in the air.

That... is the difference between Sammy and Dave. Sammy was a perfect voice, but Dave was ROCK N ROLL.
Good description! :)

Dave was one of the best front men of all time. A lot of the cheesiness in the vocal track to me exists just because it's dated material. I will say though, that song, I just never understood it's popularity. One of their worst ever IMO. I was a big VH fan back in the day, so it kind of saddens me to see them as they are now.

I really liked Sammy. I thought 5150 was a great album. And there were a couple of good songs on all their albums after that. It took a different direction that Dave could have never accomodated. If you didn't like that direction, it's easy to say Dave was better. I just think he was different. Had Dave put lyrics on the Sammy songs, they would have come out very different, from the mood all the way down to the production.

Besides, I think the VH brothers should have followed Sammy's lead, taken a bit of his advice, and gotten their middle-aged arses together. At some point, you have to stop acting like a 20-something year old idiot 24/7.

It's A Great Vocal Track. It's an integral part of Van Halens sound. Right up there with Eddie's Guitar, Alex drums, and Mikes Bass.
Take Dave's vocal out and you're left with....sammy hagar:hmm:
I know there are a lot of snobs here who will cut on Dave, But that vocal is perfect.

In fact, That vocal track doesn't show how bad Roth is, It show how good he is.

Uhhh ... riiiiiight.

No, Jimi Hendrix was Rock N Roll.

David Lee Roth is just, I don't think I can find words to describe how absolutely obnoxious and over-done he is. He's like a poor man's Gene Simmons, without the bass and the Make-up.

You wanna know what obnoxious is? It's a 400 pound Bette Midler clone standing onstage... pimping his piss water, Cabo Wabo tequilla... harder than Harvey Keitel pimped Jodie Foster in TAXI DRIVER!!! Now that's obnoxious!!

Van Halen is NOTHING without David Lee Roth.

Yeah... Some of you guys are right! Sammy Hagar is a better vocalist... but what difference does that make when your music and material is mediocre on the whole? I swear to god... the keyboard i'm typing with right now has more stage presence than Samuel Roy Hagar.

And yeah... David Lee Roth lost a lil bit of his voice... and his hair is alot thinner than it was in 1984. But he's always been the ONLY singer for Van Halen. Van Halen is an attitude... when Dave left the band they lost their attitude. They went from pure kick ass Rock N' Roll.... into a Journey cover band with Sammy Hagar... *****************!! I'm sorry guys... I find his whole act more corny than a can of Del Monte....

Rockers don't dress up like Ronald McDonald and wear Capri Pants!

MOD EDIT: ALL PROFANITY MUST BE FULLY MASKED.

i'm confused. are we trying to say that dlr is a bad singer?

i think he's a fine singer. i'm not a fan, but.....that vocal track was pretty cool.
but of course, we have all spent countless hours in the studio over the years and know better than mr. roth....and mr. hagar as well, for that matter. and of course, we can all sing better than him and have sold millions more albums than he has.....right?

I find the vocal track funny not because I think Roth is a bad singer. Quite the contrary, I think he was great for that era. But this particular track is particularly sucky. All the "woo's", "woohoo's", "Hiyah's" and the like are way over the top. Way to much, way too repetitive, etc. This one song always grated on me as a whole, but listening to just him makes it sound all the worse.

I think the only thing that would be more boring and funny would be listening to the bass track.

Awwwww, I won't cut on Dave.

I hate pretty much everything VH ever did...Roth...Hagar...who cares? Its still VH. Blech.

Man...I'm in a real "hate it all" mood today, huh? Must be the upper respiratory infection talking.

I do hate VH though. Always have, always will.

Well c'mon, at least you've got to admit Edward Van Halen is a pretty good guitar player.
