Double Bass David Sanborn

Regardless of his influences, Sanborn has an instantly recognizable tone and makes a good living playing a variety of music.

I enjoyed "Night Music" and his '80's albums with Marcus Miller, but the first thing that comes to mind when I think of DS is "Young Americans" by David Bowie--what a song!

He freely aknowledges his influences, and none of the smooth jazz radio format players that try to cop his sound play with anything close to the soul that comes out of him.

I hear a lot of King Curtis in there also.

He did a lot of playing and arranging with Paul Butterfield early on...so a whole lotta R 'n B. I really liked the pop record he did with Haden on bass.

I have nothing against David Sanborn, and I actually like him for the style he plays... but the way I see it, every second that I spend listening to him is a second that I could have spent listening to Dexter Gordon. Life's short!

Another fine player ignored by the general jazz society.
Tony Bennet had real balls and my undying respect for putting Land in his backup group for concert tours. Not the typical "safe" choice of vocalists of his genre.
Man, I just loved his playing.

I nominate my late, great friend, Bill Perkins (tenor and soprano for those of you who never knew him..... you probably saw him blowing tenor on the Tonight Show band during Johnny Carson's reign). Little guy with a giant heart. I did a gig with him once after he had had a lung removed shortly before. He played his ass off as always. I'd invited him to play on my second gig... so he called me about fifteen minutes before, and said "I'm sorry, Marcus, but I'm a little tired.. rain check". I said that's cool, and then marveled at this gentleman who thought to call and apologize that he wasn't quite up to a double after major surgery!

They don't make them like that anymore. Fortunately, I got to play with him a couple more times before he went on to his rewards.

And then there was Don Lanphere.... that was fun and scary....

I've always appreciated Sanborn's Alto work and tone. And that goes all the way back to his teenage solo with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band ("In My Own Dream"). It was an inspiringly mature solo for an 18 or 19 year-old.

Well, that was a soprano solo on "In My Own Dream", and in my opinion, a great one. I heard those guys many times when I was a kid and they kicked. Sanborn was also great in the Brecker Bros. Band. Haven't been a fan since those days, but he can play the horn and took that King Curtis and Hank Crawford style to a high level.

Still, there was some groping around in the dorm room with a Sanborn cassettee playing on the boombox. I'm sure of it, you don't forget things like that.

Wasn't Sanborn the guy first played the lick that closes SNL? Otherwise kids! listen to Ian Hunter's album "All American Alien Boy" Sanborn on sax, Dennis Elliot drums and some upstart named Jaco on bass, some cool moments for a rock album.

Sanborn. Only thing I don't like about him is all those cheap fuzak regurgitations of his sound you hear everywhere.
