If you end up getting a new pre-amp, i would recommend something that works well with piezo pickups. I use a Fishman Platinum Stage that is simple yet effective. Surfing this board will give you a number of other ideas as well.

And keep in mind when it comes to upright bass gear, you generally cannot use the same stuff you would for electric bass and guitar, or you might experience a ton of trial and error. Again, surfing the board will give you plenty of options to investigate on double bass amplification.

I second the Fishman Platinum. I've tried almost all of the preamps frequently mentioned on these boards including the Headway, and I am really pleased with the reliably good sound I can get in different rooms, different amp configurations, DI to the house, etc. I was particularly happy and totally shocked that the best "my bass but louder" came from a Bose stick system I was asked to plug into. The Bose interface has a specific preset called "Fishman Bass pickup preamp", and I was skeptical, but with zero fiddling around I got sound more like my bass than I've ever heard. Almost made me want to get one.

Try to use these things before you buy them if possible..

I did get a chance to try out the fishman pre box. (The one with EQ on it and it was grey if I remember..)

I'm not saying it was bad, but I found out I had no real reason to have it.. I just could EQ with my amp too.. But that's just my experience with it.. I'm sure it's a good box..

But you just gotta try it..


-oh and incase your wondering, I do like the para LR Baggs (brown box) better than fishman but Im not starting any wars here..ha

Be that as it may, that was not the reason that Andy Simpkins was able to get a clear, solid, warm projecting sound out of an Underwood and a Polytone Minibrute is the same hall that I could not get a well defined sound out of a Bose 802 with a JBL amp, preamp (can't remember the brand) and a 4 band parametric EQ.

Andy got that WONDERFUL sound because that was the sound in his head, and he had the ability in his hands to make that sound. You have to know what note you want to play before you play it, and you have to know how you want it to sound before you hit the string. All the gear just makes it louder. imho
