I am a gear Nazi when it comes to electric guitar and drums. Guitarists and drummers love talking about their gear ;)
(It is hard for a bassist to make impression with their Squier, you see).

Exactly!

It's a very specific type of gear-talker that I speak of. Most people are very nice, but I've gotten a lot of the jerky ones lately for some reason.

I love to learn about a new tool that I may be interested in, but it's different when someone is making those little subtle insults about your gear choice just because it's not what they use. Knowutamean?

Finally, I told him he was right. I wasted my money by spending more on my Eden rig than what I would have spent on a Mesa Boogie rig.

He shut up when we started playing. :D

Yup!

This is the kind of thing I'm talking about. Why does it matter so much to that guy what rig you are using? I'm much more interested in what I'm hearing rather than the brands I'm seeing.

Yeah, I usally just flip them off. Sometimes I whack 'em upside the head with my Precision, just for good measure.

Sad yet true....and pretty funny! I'll talk gear with anyone, drums, gits, bass. I do hear ya though on the annoying drunk gear hounds and all, I've been bothered b4 when trying to tear down - let me work here!

It may be about what gear I have - or should have. Or it could be about his gear (yes, it's always a guy).

It occurred to me that I could just pretend not to be a bass player and not know anything about gear.

For instance, I could say, "Well, you know, I don't really even play bass. My main instrument is <insert anything other than bass here>. I just fill in on bass every once in a while."

I mean I don't like being rude, but I just want to play (and scope out chicks mainly) - not talk about gear all night.

I like talking gear as much as anyone here, I'm sure, however if someone is being a snob about how much better his gear is, I'll just shrug and say: 'Oh well, I like what I play'.

I usually don't miss opportunities to talk gear with someone who seems knowledgeable, I might just learn something.
