Dean Garcia - Curve

Hi,

Does anybody out there know about Dean Garcia, his tone and his use of effects? Particularly the Boss TW1 Touch Wah. Which songs is this used in? Also, I am more interested in getting the bass tone from the Doppelganger albums. How does he get this unbelievable sound? Easily, one of the greatest bass players of all time.

Please help.

I don't know about his a effects chain, but I dig Dean's playing with Eurythmics and Curve. Curve where a great band that never really caught on over here. If I remember correctly Dean did some nice fretless work on some Dave Stewart productions too.....great player!

But which particular songs showcase the TW1 Touch Wah?

Any ideas? Also, the doppelganger album bass sound on a song such as fait accompli - does this song for example use all of the pedals as shown in the guitargeek pedal chain?

Can any one confirm?

can't really confirm WHAT he used on the Doppelganger record, but I know he's been a big fan of Music Man basses.... between his effects tweaking, and Toni Halliday's husband Alan Moulder producing, who knows what they did / used, but it sure is delicious.

NICE THREAD! Dean Garcia is in my top 5 bassists ever...a tremendous influence on me and my playing style.... great player.

Great to see some chat about Dean Garcia!
This guy had such a great dark tone but his processing choices really made his great parts sit up in a mix. He managed to keep his personality through Eurythmics to Sinead live to Curve while contributing something different to each project. One of my absolute faves! Also, Curve were a great band and ahead of their time in many ways. I'm not really sure why they got lumped into that "shoegazing" genre, I guess its the fault of the British music press of the day...

there were different branches of shoegazer, curve were the more electronic, but they still had a lot of fuzz and whatnot, and a feeling very similar to my bloody valentine...

This is still a term that was coined by the British music press to conveniently categorize disparate bands.
Dean and Toni have both stated that they certainly did not wake up one day and decide to form a "shoegazer" band.

I'd say that it was their relationship to Alan Moulder, certainly one of the pre-eminant producers of that scene. Plus, they totally had the post-MBV wash of Jazzmaster/Big Muff/Marshall that everybody copped form J Mascis.

Great bass player, with his own slick lazy style. I've just heard Spc Eco's newish ep BFW. It has gloriously squished Curve bass tones all over it. Free download from their space camp website. Highly recommended.
For the touch wah sound- listen to Die Like A Dog (peel sessions). It's impossible not to notice.

Was talking to Dean on Bandcamp the other day, nice guy. Then I came across this thread. Here's the illustration of his bass and MIDI setup for anyone interested. It's the Guitargeek image from 2004.
